Ford and General Motors recalled the most vehicles in 2005, more than 6 million and 5 million vehicles, respectively.

However, the auto industry as a whole recalled 41 percent fewer vehicles in 2005 than in 2004, which was a record-breaking year, according to figures released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In 2004 there were 601 recalls that affected 30,830,469 vehicles. In 2005, there were 557 vehicle safety recalls covering 18,050,631 vehicles.

Rounding out the four largest manufacturers, Toyota recalled 2.2 million vehicles last year and DaimlerChrysler followed with nearly 766,000 vehicles recalled.

One factor that inflates recall numbers is the industry practice of sharing parts among a large number of vehicles, the story said. If a single part goes bad, it can affect millions of vehicles. In Ford's case, a single recall to fix a speed control switch that could short-circuit and ignite fires accounted for nearly two-thirds of its overall tally.

"Because of the changing nature of the industry, it doesn't take much to send the numbers upward," said NHTSA spokesman Rae Tyson. "We really don't read a whole lot into these fluctuations that occur from one year to the next."
