Not a Cav? what else is there?
Thursday, December 29, 2005 2:18 PM
Well, I've decided to consider a car project that doesn't involve me disassembling my daily driver CavZ. I'm wanting to go Boost eventually so I think I want to get a car with some form of stock boost and tinker with that to gain some knoledge. I'm looking to spend under $1,000 initally on the car (hopefully well under) and I do plan on putting money into it, obviously, but I just need some input on specific vehicles that may be "user friendly", reliable, nicely modded and has parts readily available either in a Yard or carpart store. What might everyone suggest?

No, I'm not joking.

Well, I almost didn't check the minivan site out but I'm glad I did! It makes me wonder what other vehicles have had an unsuspecting Turbo under the hood. I'll have to look into the caravan, I could use it as a utility van to haul crap around too.

I got mine for $700

most good runing 87-89 supras go for about $1000-$1200 in decent running condition

I got a lot of good used parts on ebay... every week when I search "7MGTE" I get at least 3 pages of results of OEM stuff, to aftermarket

3 liter inline 6 cylinder
a fairly large turbo stock with plenty of headroom
limited slip differential stock (turbo models)
very comfy inside (drivers seat is awesome)
excellent handling for a car its size and weight/ fully independent suspension
decent looks (hey its an 80s car)

you get what you pay for

insurance on them is cheap too.. .I pay less to insure my supra (a sports car) then I do for my cavalier (an economy car) and both have the same amount of coverage.

An old mid-80s to mid-90s Mopar with a Turbo 2.2 or Turbo 2.5, look for a Turbo II car, they came with an intercooler. Mopar threw those old turbo 4-cylinders in just about every car they made during that time period, including those minivans you looked at.

There were 4 different versions of the 2.2 and 2.5 turbo engines
Turbo I - Non-Intercooled
Turbo II - Intercooled
Turbo III - Extremely rare found only in the Spirit R/T and Daytona Iroc R/T for 3 years
1991-1993, it was a 2.2L I-4 with a Lotus 16V Head, came stock with 220 HP
Turbo IV - Another rare engine came with a Variable Nozzle Turbo, that worked to
eliminate turbo lag at Low RPMs, while still giving the benefits of a larger
turbo at Higher RPMs

That's just the basics and I'm sure I missed a lot of information but it's enough to get you started

Well, I am gathering good info here to begin my search. The $1,000 is just my max to buy the initial car, not for all the eventual work and parts to be encountered later! Anything good about VW, Volvo, Saab? How about opinions on Supercharged Crown Vics, Grand Prix, or any 3800 platform motors? Thanks for all the info guys!

If you go with a 240 SX, make sure you have another vehicle, you're going to be part-driving a LOT.

these supras are pretty sweet cars! I just bought one and its a fun car to drive, and have very nice size turbos for stock!
but ill always say dsm's above any other lol, very cheap and if you know what your doing it will be relable untill you go into big turbo range. or do what im doing dsm swap into a 89 dodge colt hatchback lol

How about an old T5 Volvo? Very practical, and if you upgrade the turbo and the intercooler you can easily have a car running 14s or lower. Saabs would be harder to tune I think.

My suggestion would be look for a cheap, old DSM (Eclipse/Talon)

I agree that older DSM cars would be a nice DD...they are quite reliable if they arent beat on

Other than that you cant go wrong with an old volvo/ civic

how about a fiero gt ( not turbo'd or supercharged though) I think old imprezza's were turbod also ,but your best bet is a dsm

DSM is what you are looking for. You can definitly find an older gsx for under a grand if you look around. There are also a ton of cheap mods you can do to them to get movin. If you for some reason decide against a DSM, a 89-91 rex or 89-91 civic wouldn't be a bad idea either. They are both really light and engine swaps and/or turbo give awesome gains.
