First gen dsm's are sweet. They do have there share of problems tho if you push it. Is it going to be a back up or do you want to race/mod it?

just remember...when you get 15 year old cars you'll probably have to do some wrenching on them. IMO its better to buy one that has a blown engine or something and just go back through it and rebuild everything.
If I were looking for an emergency backup car, I'd steer clear of a DSM. Reliability tends to be a big issue with those cars. I'd say go with something easy and cheap, and reliable as anything out there. Best bet would be a '94-'97(ish? not sure on the exact years, but it's around there I think) Corolla. Dirt cheap, barely any insurance, and take a beating better than Borsty's mom.
First of all, I'd like to thank certain JBO'ers for being such Cobalt-nut-sucking tools.
Secondly, I'd like to thank Travis Kearny and Jordan Kruger for being so entertaining.

if u would get the CRX look around the rocker panels, rear fenders *i forget right now what there called 6:50am i haven't had sleep and look under it for rust. from what i hurd i wouldn't get a vw there hard to work on the engines. also look for a older Civic si there nice but its a honda lol.maybe a older s-10 get it and convert it to a 350 v8
. or even maybe a new civic 95 and up there nice.
^^see thats what had came to mind. for a while i had heard that DSM's had lots of dings to them when u start hooking them up. as for the VW theres only one recognizable shop in town and their known to be expensive, so thats a no no. as for the toyota and 95+ civic ill look into them. i planning not to spend over 2g's. any more advice?
