Need help with 200,000 mile civic...
Tuesday, December 20, 2005 9:28 PM
I have a 1995 civic dx coupe which just turned over 200,000 miles. The problem I am having is that if the car sits outside for an extended period of time in the cold, it often takes numerous tries to start it and will only start with the gas pedal to the floor. What things should I look into in order to correct this problem? First thing I checked was the battery and it is in good condition. I need some direction on where to go from here. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

May wanna try something as simple as changing a fuel filter. Dump a little dry gas in the tank while your at it.

acually on really cold days i have to have the gas pedal down as well but with fuel injected cars it works differently: I believe in a carbed car you floor the peddle you dump loads of gas into the carb and can flood it out. In a fuel injected car though when you put the peddle down it stops your car from dumping loads of fuel into your car atleast thats what i was told which could be wrong but i was told from the gm dealership that its normal on a cold day to have to put your gas pedal down to start it

how does the civic run normally?

PPPSSSS!!!! MMMMMmmmMMM boost=yummy

Can anyone verify this? I know the fuel filter is more than a year or so old and needs to be changed regardless so I will try that. Any more info would be helpful, thanks.

i'd say fuel filter myself.

idk if a 95 civic would have a choke on it, but maybe check that if it does. i have an old s10 that used to do that, but it was a first gen, carbed 4 banger. and it was the choke. just a suggestion lol

I got the new filter in last night so well see how it works out. Its been driving a lot more lately, so I'll have to let it sit for a while and then try to start it. Lets hope for the best. Thanks.

95 civics are fuel injected! And only on carb vehicles is it required to push the accell once or twice depending on car to set the choke so there is adequate fuel for it to start.Fuel injected cars prime themselves once u turn the ignition key to on and depressing the accell would only flood the system with more fuel than necessary.Only reason I am half az fluent with the 95 is my wife owned one for nine yrs bought new,did all the maintenance except the timing belt.Great car it was a ex.

I have done all of the maintance on this car as well. Very good car, still runs well and as been running well for years. I know that it is not normal to have to depress the gas pedal to start it which is why I started the tread to begin with. Like I said, I changed the fuel filter and it seems to be working fine now. Well see...

yea im saying either the filter or the fuel pump is weak.....my cousin has a 94 EX, and when he bought it the maintenace record sheet said it has about 3 fuel pumps replaced in about 100,000 miles so it must be a weak point on those cars

It's been doing well with just the filter change. It has been sitting for all of yesturday and today. And it is starting to get colder, so we'll see if it starts up later tomorrow. I'm hoping its not the pump, I don't want to replace it. It does need some new plugs and wires though... maybe that will be my christmas present to the car.

From what I've read/learned about driving in sub zero temps:
1-use some Gas line Anti-freeze. A bottle per tank if you fill up when its mild out.
2-don't crank it over immediately... leave the key in the "on" position for a few seconds (no more than 10 seconds) before starting the car... let the fuel pump build up pressure.
3-don't go for short trips if you can help it.
4-replace the fuel filter... it's @ 200,000... time to change.

If it's not network news, it's probably the truth getting out.

Some people are like slinkies: Not really good for anything,
but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them
down a flight of stairs.

I have never heard of anti-freeze for the gas... would I just pick this up at a local parts store? I changed the filter late last week and let the car sit since the 23rd. Went out tonight and it started up just fine, so I think the filter was probably the main problem. But I'm sure the anti-freeze wouldnt hurt if it's not going to get driven much.

I was thinking this too, so maybe a fuel injector or something is leaking very slowly, gradually flooding the engine while it sits?

If the engine was flooded then why would I have to depress the gas pedal to start it? Could be my stupidity, but that doesn't seem very logical.

Gasoline antifreeze NO.What it really is is isoproply alcohol is what the product really contains. It just simply evaporates the water in the fuel to prevent it from freezing.U can buy the same thing in the pharmacy area of any store a small bottle for under a buck will do the job. While they do makea so called winter version of this in most auto stores and says to prevent the problem like dry gas is the name,u can use the normal isopropyl which is much cheaper an same results, will NOT harm the car at all.But since ur rides running fine I would not worry much about it.I never in the 9 yrs we owned our civ had fuel filter issues or pump issues at all.

I work at a pharmacy so I know what you are talking about, but I don't want to risk hurting the car. I think I'll hold off on both of them unless some other problems begin to arise. So far the car has been okay... although it hasn't been used much, just sort of moved about the driveway. It also hasn't gotten nearly as cold as it was when the problem arose... in fact I think the tempurature is supposed to be in the high 40s tomorrow so I will have to wait until the tempurature drops to truly see if all is well.
