95 Ford Contour

Well my escort @!#$ the bed and now i need to find a new car
Theres a car near by, 95 Ford Contour SE, its a V6, auto, ac, pw/pl, cruise, etc etc. 95k miles. They are asking 2850 but with no warranty (small garage type place is selling it). Now i know the price is right around blue book (i might try and talk them down to 2500 if i decide to go with this car) But i need the org's opinion first. Is this car RELIABLE? I checked msn.com, there werent any major problems for this model year, however user reviews were pretty much up and down (either really good or super bad) I am not sure if i should really put much stake in the user reviews, so i need to know your opinions as i cfan trust them better than random reiviews. Any help is appreciated.

Id say that would be a good price. Did you check the recalls, if there is any? And if you want to make them better, you could always go to the SVT line They definatly have potential in general, IF you plan on doing that.

well i know there have been recalls. I dont know what work has been done to the car tho, or how many owners. All i did was check the car out at night, no one was around to ask those questions

Contours are decent cars, and the V6 can be fun if you put on the SVT parts. I'd say the price is a bit steep but for $2300 I'd take it. Don't pay $2850 though.

2850 is actually less than the blue book (just under 3000), but id definitely try to talk him down anyways

Take the VIN # and take it to a Ford dealer's service dept and politely go to a service writer and ask for a history report, there they will tell if any recalls was issued or done. Also it will tell you in details what was done, at least for warranty work.

You can get the same year Mark VIII for the same price in decent shape, and you would be much happier. That price is very high, I would expect it to go for maybe $1,000 at auction. The used car market is very weak right now due to all the incentives going around on new cars.

um of course it would be cheaper at auction
and i dont think i would be happier with the mark 8
id much rather have a four door sporty 6 than a bigger uglier v8 coupe
the blue book for the mark 8 is also double the contour
so i doubt i could get it for the same price

You might want to look around in the real world, I can get a lower mile Mark in the real world than what you are are willing to pay for a Contour, a car that is hideous imo. Blue book doesn't mean jack in the real world. If I ask 100 people which looks better, at least 90 will say the Mark, and I am willing to bet you can't run mid 14's stock like I did either. Oh well, to each their own, if you are happy with a slower car, so be it.

There's a reason the Contour's sister car is commonly called the Mercury "Mistake".....

Contour's are a definately decent vehicle. My neighbor bought his new in 97, and has been very happy with it since. He just has the 4 cyl though. That car is a good size, and there is some aftermarket support for it too.

well weve had contours in the family before
we had a 98 that was the 4 cylinder and was a good car, but my dad wanted something with more oomph so we sold that, had no problems
then he later ended up getting a 98 with the 6 but it was a lemon, there musta been flood/water damage because there were a few signs of that and the engine kept going through water pumps
Now i know that the 95 im askin about is a v6 as well, however, the ratings for it seem better than any other year (odd seeing as how its the first year it was made in the us)
I know that there are a lot of problems with the later 4 cylinders. Im probably just gonna carfax it and also talk to the seller and see whats up. I wanted a contour before i got the cav, and now might be my chance. If anyone else has any experiences to share, please do

Check out www.contour.org

They will have all the answers for you. I would recommend to go for the SVT or at least a 5 speed.

I have a 99 LX Contour 4 cylinder with 72,456 miles and it has been great. They are pretty reliable depending on how you treat the car. I like the post 98 styling but what the heck its not like you are buying it to be a show stopper.

If you got any questions email me.

Yeah, good luck with the car. Post pics once you pick it up. IF you got any questions let me know!

Well i still gotta check on the car itself and i probably wont be able to until after christmas now. Ive been busy with work and stuff so next week ill talk to the guy selling it and see whats the deal and also do a carfax check as well as probably visit a ford dealer like goodwrench suggested. The recall work is what im concerned most about and also if the car has had many problems/work done on it and the number of owners. If its clean and has had one owner, then i will probably get it. The thing i like best about these cars is they handle like nothing else ive driven.

True, they do handle very well. Keep us posted!

There was just a V-6 sold in the parts section of Ebay, a 95 I believe, for less than $400. It ran and drove, just needed a headlight and a marker light.

i went today and actually checked out the 4 cylinder one, and the s10. I wasnt too happy with either one. The guy had a 96 and 86 ranger there too. The 86 ranger was clean as all hell, only had 49k on it (and trust me, it didnt look like it even had that much. The engine bay was as clean as a new cars). I might actually be leaning towards the 86 ranger right now, but there are other cars to check out. The one on ebay that you just posted marked is too far away for me. I need something local and cheap.
