Looking into a 4x4, Need some help!
Monday, December 05, 2005 1:09 PM
I have been wanting to get a vehicle that would better suit my needs for what i like to do which is mainly, camping, kayaking, hunting and fishing. My Lowered cavalier isn't cutting it anymore nor is my PT crusier. So i am parting out the cav and selling it to my gurl. I've always wanted a jeep wrangler but the more i think about it, its not as practical as i would like for my next car to be. I want to be able to tow a 14'-18' ski boat ( non-jetski). I would like it to be brand new. I am planning on trading in my PT crusier since it was free and i don't owe jack on it. I figure i would get around 9-10K for it. Then around another 2K downpayment. So in the end i only want to have a loan out for 10-13K at most.

Chevy Trail Blazer LTZ
Ford Sport-trac
Wrangler Sport- rocky mtn edition ( still possible)
Nissan Xterra
Toyota Rav-4

Also prefferably a V-6 and not an 8. If anyone else has any ideas i am very open at this point.

I love my ZR-2 S-10. I was looking at sport tracs before I bought my S-10. They are junk!!!!

i have a colorado base model 5 speed 4x4 and i love it. it's pretty quick too in its own right. my parents had a trailblazer and now an envoy which they love. personally i would get the traiblazer because its got a decent output engine and is only 6 cyl.

women are like cars you have to test drive the new one before you trade in the old one

I have seen MULTIPLE accidents with heavy front end damage with no airbag deployment on the trailblazers/envoys. I personally would look for an 2000 or so blazer or s-10 pickup, zr2 if you can find it. My LS blazer 4x4 is VERY capable for being stock, only got it stuck once and that was in deep soupy mud

The Trailblazer, and Sport Trac will be ok for what you're planning on doing, but they will easily be outshined by the Xterra and the Wrangler once the road ends. The RAV4 has no place whatsoever in this comparison, it's a tall car period, can't tow a turd, and has a FWD biased AWD system that will get you stuck more then it will help you out. The Wrangler really can't tow a whole heck of a lot due to it's short wheelbase, it will be unstable towing at speed. Out of those choices the Xterra would be the best choice, but I would highly recommend a 4-door pick-up like a Toyota Tacoma, after I switched from my Durango to my Ram I will never again go to a SUV, it has already become much more useful then my Durango ever was. I could haul 4 31" tires in the bed and still had enough room in the cab to fit all of my Martial Arts gear to run a class for about a dozen Marines.

Pick-ups are going to be more stable towing, plus you have the bed to stow all your gear and still have room to fit at least 4 adults in the cab. If you have to have a V-6 then the Tacoma is your best bet, the Dakota is nice, but you need the V-8 to make it competitive, and the Tacoma is much better off-road then the Dakota. A 4-Runner is a very good choice as well, but that may be too expensive for you right now.

Yella02-I promise I will return to you in one piece and this will stay up until I am safely home

I know i am going to want somthing that can do a little off pavement excursions. So i figured the blazer would prolly be out. Might just have to hold off on getting my boat till further down the road. Might just get some annoying sea-doo's instead and stick with my wrangler. One of my managers has a Rav-4 and i thought it was a cool little suv, but no clue on them. While my GM had a wrangler, and one of my co-workers just picked up a used 97 wrangler sport that he fixed. Just may have to stick to my love for the wranglers.

If you can't get a wrangler I would def lean towards a Xterra.

^^^ haha that hurt my feelings somehow. So if he won't get a Jeep TJ
he shouldn't consider a different Jeep... like ahum the cherokee.
You know Jeep actually makes more than the TJ.

I don't know why you want to put yourself in a financial ditch. A used
Cherokee (Grand or Regular Classic) won't set you back more than
the money you get selling your car.

@!#$ out of all those give me a GC limited or Larado with towing package. Great off road and good towing power. Plus nice inside. And you could pick up a nice one for 12..and a great one for 15-20k

I work with 2 girls that love their Xterras, so much that they convinced a guy I work with that he would want one too. However, upon sitting in the Xterra, he didn't even fit. He never left for a test drive due to the fact he felt so cramped. I'm not sure how tall you are, but he is 6ft 4. Just something to consider.

The Xterra's are pretty nice. I have a friend that owns one and they are nice to drive in and do pretty well when driving on trails and towing his jet ski's and trailers.

Have a good one,
Justin

colorado, w/ the off road package

i love that truck, with the I-5 you should be able to easily tow a boat about that size

but if i have to choose from the list, i say the trailblazer, my friend has had one for a few years with the I-6 and he goes to school where it's about a 12hr drive from where we live, and he does it all the time and no problems....it's also pretty quick and does awsome in the snow cuz he uses it for snowboarding and stuff like that up in the mountains
