What do you think of the Lotus Elise?
Sunday, December 04, 2005 12:28 AM
This is my next project car... a 2005 Lotus Elise. I've begun stripping and parting out my drag car and all of my extra parts I've had around. Business on ebay has been extremely good to me lately so I've decided to save for what I really want. I should be able to afford it around summer or fall of 2006.
I just want to know what people think of the car?
Mine is going to be pearl white.

The color is undebatable. For the most part the car is going to be stock besides for some nice one-off red kevlar/carbon fiber body pieces and a low boost turbo set-up. The paint is an extra fine pearl white that I have already purchased.
Can you tell I am excited about this car?

are you getting a hard top one? the sport package? or touring package?

Re: What do you think of the Lotus Elise?

hard top...... I know how light they are... 1984lbs......
I am just going to make a carbon fiber lip kit... get rid of those ugly mirros in favor of carbon F1 mirrors... then making the hood, roof and engine cover out of the red carbon/kevlar and taking the pearl white paint onto it all some.. I've had it all drawn out for a while now.

car weighs in at 1984 lbs w/ about 190 hp

I always liked the car and got some hands on time at the international car show here in Miami a few weeks back. it will be a very spirited ride for sure. I wouldn't recommend it for a grocery getting though, no place to put you and the food.

its a pretty sick car but when my dad was looking at them, i found them to be a pain in the ass. its like getting into a cockpit when ever you want to go for a ride, then getting out is the same. Thank god he went with the C6

good luck with it

Agreed. Though I wouldn't buy one at all with any exterior modding in mind.

The best stock handling car I ever came across. The 1.8L toyota engine is explosive above around 5500rpms with a great sounding exhaust through out rev band. With its light weight its so easy to toss around.
The car right of the box is ready for road racing and it is an excellent base to start with.
The seats feel like it came straight out of a race car, hard but well contoured. The interior is spartan with all the aluminum exposed, but who cares, the car is a race car.

If I had to complain it would be the entry/exit with the top on. Damn is it ever hard to get in/out, it's way easier with the top off. I swear you got to be 15 years old and gymnist to get in.
Other then that, the car superb and a very fun experience. I'd just get the sport package to get the ultimate package and no power anything features. Hell, the car is so small you can streatch your arm a little to roll the pass window. lol

I'd drive the hell out of one of them. I've heard they handle fantastic. I'm still waiting for one to show up at a Local Autox so I can beg for a ride.

I'd have gone with a Lotus Exige personally (Po-Tay-To, Mo-Naked-Hos... the Exige is a racing version without the removable hardtop/cloth top), but you can't get them without the Land Rover engine... The Toyota 1.8 VVT engine compliments the car very nicely, and I remember seeing a couple in Britain with Honda B18 Engines in them. The only downside I think is that the engine bay is a little small to stuff a turbo in... things are cozy in there with the 1.8, and a snail-shell may just require the removal of the Muffler if I remember right.

Either way, the Elise is a great driving car (extremely solid chassis) and very nimble.

I'm sure you'll love it.

^^^^I would love to have an exige. I do have to stick to cars available in the states though. They never made a left-side drive exige... they barely made any right-side in this body style. The body mods I am doing are actually going to model after the exige a little. There is plenty of room to boost an elise though. The trunk sits directly behind the exhaust manifold so I'm simply going to notch the trunk wall. It's fiberglass with an aluminum heat shield.

Ahh... Didn't realise you planned on modifying the trunk

And they never made a LHD Exige because... why???

The Elise/Exige were never supposed to be RHD, and the few you'd see on the continent were invariably British in origin.

I've never driven one personally, but other than the fact that they're a weeeee bit cramped for larger fellows (like myself), they're supposed to be hell on wheels from the dealership

Best of luck!

I'm not complaing that there is no Left side exige... I just said that is why I'm not getting an exige over an elise... the elise is readily available to me. They sticker at $50+ depending on the package but I am getting a great deal on mine with a few thousand miles already on it. I've never driven one but I have been inside one with the top on. It wasn't very hard for me to get into. I am 5'11" and weigh about 175lbs. I'm into short, petite chicks too so it all works out well.

$40,000 base model and $49,000 with the works

Re: What do you think of the Lotus Elise?

Damn... that's a lot of cash...

I'd rather import a used Brit Exige and get a Lotus mechanic to work on it...
$50K USD? Good lord.
