I'm trying to help a friend in search of a first car for his little brother.
His family is trying to decide between a Neon or an Escort. they wanted something
cheap, 10 years old or less, airbags, and under 3 grand.
Though I'm not sure why they don't consider a Cavalier, though his sister has one....
So I was figuring 95-99 Neon, and 97-99 Escort.
They are both pretty good beaters.....so it does make it a bit tough...
Besides the head gasket issue for the Neon, and trans issues with some Escorts..
What would you recommend?
depends, you would have to give us specific cars. so we can compare miles, condition, and price....you know all that good stuff. not just neon vs escort...because they each have pros and cons.
FOR SALE: (5) '95-'99 Z24 Rims
I would go with a neon just because they look better

That, and their cheap as hell with decent power. I went with a 96 SOHC. No problems so far, and they take one hell of a beating.
If its between an old (97 and older) Escort and Neon, I say the Escort. If its 99ish, i say Neon
id vote escort even thou i hate ford i hate neons even more.

Escorts seem to have decent reliability. I keep seeing Neons with blown engines.
neons are dependable and reliable, if its a 95-98 you should change the headgasket, thats the only real weak link on them. now, my friend has a 2002 escort and its nothing but trouble.....in and out of the shop, i think escorts are nothing but a driving heap of junk. for what your looking for id say a j body or a neon is the best bets for domestic cars

Under 3 grand? A 95-97 I4 Camry. Much better build quality than the compacts/subcompacts, and since it's a midsize, you have a chance of getting one from a more responsible/older owner, rather than an entry level that's likely beat to high hell.

Hell yes I will!!
Can you pencil me in for the 9th too, thats my b-day
the older Escort GT's with the zetec engines were quite spiffy indeed, very fun little drives. (felt like the protege 5 when driving), NEONS... Fun as hell to drive, but with my experiences they chomped up way to much gas and had way to many problems... I don't know how any of you found "reliable" ones..
My Cav
I give up...
i'm buying a VW those people love trees, so they should love eachother too... "Andy"

True.
My wife had a 95 Neon...Even with the head gasket...(darn thing went twice)...it always got great gas milage.
Toward the end, I gave up on it...the last month I beat it pretty good...
That , and her sister borrowed it, and left it running for an hour in 90 degree heat...
It still ran decent, even after that...

Well, expect for the electrical issues I see more of them have, I would pretty much agree
with that....
It's funny you say that about those last few years of te Escorts...I know a few people
who had issues after the 2000 models....

I'll try.
Be hard sell to a 16 year old though...
