The Japanese automaker said the paint contains a newly developed resin that can stop scratches from marking the car's outer layer.
Wear and tear due to everything from fingernails to roadside objects will disappear in one day to one week depending on the temperature and the seriousness of the scratch, Nissan said in a statement.
The "Scratch Guard Coat" paint, which protects for three years, will debut on a sports-utility vehicle which is set for a makeover, Nissan said.
The paint also helps prevent scratches in the first place. Nissan said a vehicle with the paint suffers only one-fifth of the usual abrasions caused by car-washing machines -- the main culprit for scratches.

I wonder how much it'd cost to respray a Sunfire with that. Sounds really really good, it just seems that we won't really know until the paint gets a real-world test.

That sounds pretty cool.
Are you sure its actually Nissan that developed this new paint though?? I didn't think they dealt directly with paint technology, I'd expect something like this from a company like Dupont.

hope it works because nissans paint sucks for the most part. My fathers nissan has more chips in its hood at 10k mile than my escort had at 255K. I know a few other nissan owners who have had problems and nissan basically told them to go shove it and wont cover it under any warranty.

I think the paint is a regenerative one... there are plastics like that... When you break the surface layer, it lets out a minute amount of a resin and hardener, that cures under UV light.
Very cool.
If it's not network news, it's probably the truth getting out.
