Dodge Neon

I was just wondering what the Dodge Neon engines are like in general. I was told they're complete crap and die after 100,000 miles or so, and also what the difference between a Neon and an SRT is. Just turboed?

The srt motor is a completely different beast. The older neon soch motors weren't very good.

make sure you get a DOHC with 5-speed if you do get one. the older DOHC stock is slighty quicker than a Z

Its a completly different motor, I believe the stock motor is the 2.0? and the SRT-4 motor is a 2.4 out of the stratus or intrepid, even built up a little?

the first gen neons came with a 2.0 sohc or a 2.0 dohc, theyre both about the same, in stock form the dohc is better on paper, but its tried and true that the sohc is better once modded, less to fail on you. and yeah the headgasket goes at about 100k miles, but it doesn't kill the motor, you just change it and keep on going, my brothers neon has over 200k miles and still runs strong.

and the srt has a 2.4 turbo which is based on the stratus engine, but stronger internal parts

2.0 liter neon motors are notorious for blowing head gaskets, the dohc was better but the we still mistsubitchy shared crap.the 2.4 srt-4 motor is stronger, but had a few problems with the first 2003 model run.If you're going to get a neon buy a 2004 and newer srt-4 they are the only ones worth the money.

Exactly. If you have a 1st gen SOHC, you can take the head and valvetrain from the newer Magnum SOHC in 2nd gens and instantly be faster than the DOHC 1st gens. Grab the 2 stage intake manifold too. The main restriction on 1st gen SOHC's is the exhaust side of the engine. You'll nice gains from a full header-back exhaust.

Yes, they blow headgaskets, but after 98 i believe, that problem is solved. I know 2nd gens have less of a problem with it. There is over 190K miles on mine and it runs very strong (mods in profile).

The headgasket in mine didn't even make it to 100k (went at 90k)

They also tend to have electrial issues too....

Though those cars will take a beating..and also got great gas milage...even when it was burning two quarts of oil every few weeks....

The 1st gens look bettter though...(had a 95)

And you can get them cheap....and fun to drive...

I'm actually thinking about picking up another one as a beater...

I found a 98 w/ 62,000 miles for $2200...I just didn't get there fast enough...

Can also get a Magnum ECU and have a dealer program it for your car. Friend is having it done this winter. He is waiting on Intake Manifold. Then you don't need to hook up a RPM window switch to open the other intake runners at higher RPM.

yeah after 98, the older neons broke 100k and dodge realized the error in the Headgaskest and fixed it, theyre nice cars, real easy to mod, simple in design, look nice and go pretty good too

my brothers neon is awsome, its a 96 sohc, no powersteering, no AC, no nothing really, his engine bay has a engine, tranny, alternator, radiator and thats about it, his battery is in the trunk, it looks awsome under the hood, no crap cluttering it iup
