Check out CobaltSS.net, theres tons of info there and plenty of feedback from actal owners.
So far the Cobalt SS Supercharged's reliability has been very good. The issues that people have come accross are mostly minor. Things like idle problems (fixed with dealer re-flash), sunroof trim coming loose, and leather door inserts not fitting perfectly. The kinds of things that are expected in a first year vehicle, but are easily corrected.
As for performance specs, heres the most common ones that mags/owners are getting:
0-60: 6.0 seconds
1/4 Mile: 14.5 @98MPH
Skidpad: .88g's
Slalom: 69MPH
And as was mentioned, the weight of the SS S/C is 2991lbs per GM.
Let me know if you want any more info.

Or you could get an Ion redline..
Red 2005 Saturn Ion-3 Coupe
I have an 05' SS/SC worth every penny! Mine has the G85 performance package (A must!), sunroof and side head curtain airbags. I really like it I have not had any major problems with this car. It is powerful, but you still can get 27mpg on the highway. It is up to you, I would check out the competitors before you settle down to buy.

Only if you are diehard Chevy/GM you would want to buy this. The price is MSRP $21,995 w/no options and no it is not worth it. There are way better cars for less or equal or sometimes a touch more in price.

Look at a Honda, Acura, Subaru, or wait on the Mazdaspeed 3. The g85 pack with LSD and Recaros will run you an extra $1500 on top of the $22K for a total of $23.5K. For $25K you can get a real car and not a dated econobox: The Mustang GT

You are looking at 14.7-8 sec w/ some minor bolt ons. Showroom stock you would be looking at 14.9-15.1.
As for reliability, as of what I know there was there was a engine fire on the LSJ on last years Saturn Redline also there have been some TSBs by GM for some known quirks too.

If you like it, get it. Sounds like you like it already.
If you are looking for pure speed, it may be your best bet
If you are looking for a nice car, inside and out, and dont care so much about speed, there are several options out there that are better and probably less costly.
the cobalt is a good car ... except for that ugly ass interior. The only thing that would make that car better would be a female voice saying "welcome to the early 90s" when you open the doors. Ohh ... and way too much plastic for 21k

Yea sure. Too bad the car has every option besides a sunroof, XM, and Onstar included in the base price. Better cars for less money?? Why don't you name one, and don't say SRT-4, because its outclassed by the SS in every category besides straight line acceleration - Not to mention its been discontinued.

How is it a dated econobox?? It came out in 2005 you moron, and the chassis is not nearly as old as you claim it to be. None of those cars you listed even comes close to the performance that the SS S/C offers stock, try again.

Maybe you didn't notice that I already posted the times above. Like I said, mags as well as owners have been pulling consistant 14.5's in the 1/4 mile, stock. Guys with bolt-ons are in the low 14's.

I've never heard of any LSJ "catching fire", sounds like more of your BS to me. They may have had a recall for a defective fuel line, but there were never any reports of cars bursting into flames

Why do you have to go and start @!#$?? I posted the correct info, and GGT comes on and starts spewing bull@!#$ because he doesn't like the car. That doesn't help anybody, so I'm correcting him. Its not my fault he's a biased moron.

i dont think wesman was attacking anyone, he was just pointing out FACT, not OPINION about the cobalt.
but lets keep the thread clean. i was wondering, the suspension on the SS s/c, how does it handle on a road course? i know some of you posted handling G's, etc., but how does it feel with the "sport tuned" suspension on curvey roads?

Sounds to me like you've already made up your mind so it doesn't matter if the cobalt is crap or not. You're a "chevy guy" and so you're gonna buy a chevy.. why bother even asking for opinions then?
You also realize that the RSX Type S is a Honda with an A badge on it, right?
brew-san wrote:CaliforniaCavalier wrote:and i forgot to mention: i will NEVER own a honda. i dont care if they are more reliable and faster. i will never own anything with an H on it.

because everyone and thier mother has a damn honda. every single friend i have has a honda other then that guy with the rsx typeS.
they might last forever and be easy to get parts for, but i cant stand seeing them everywhere...i just like to be diffrent.

not true. im not ONLY a chevy guy. i do like the nissan 350z, but those are a little out of my price range. i would love to have an AWD car such as a WRX STI or somthing like that, but those are a little too expensive also.
and yes i relize acura is pretty much honda with diffrent badging....but you also dont see acura RSX's or most other acuras cruising around here too much. at least where i live. its all hondas here...all civics with big rims and APC stickers. come to nor cal and ill show you what im talking about.

everybody and their grandma has a J/cobalt too man
get what you want
Id rather get a slightly used WRX than a new cobalt though
Mr.Goodwrench-G.T. do you own a Cobalt SS G85? You must not because the only thing that you came close on was the price of the car being a little too high. The rest of your points are just plain stupid. What are you comparing it to your Z06?

CaliforniaCavalier wrote:. i fell in love with my cavalier, and thats why im looking at cobalts.
People here running low 15's high 14's with N/A Ecos and 2.4s. Dont expect the Cobalt to be such a big change performance wise, and while the SS is faster (duh), how much power do you need in a street driven car?
For the kind of money there are asking for it, it could be better. Doesn't have independent rear suspension, and while parts of the interior have improved, alot of it reeks of cheapness. The styling is pretty pedestrian too, but of course that is an individual thing. It (the SS) certainly doesn't make the statement a Solstice makes for a cheaper price.
Since you don't want to copy your friend, I would take a hard look at the Mazda 3 Sport. If GM starts slashing prices on the Cobalt like they did with the Cavalier then it might be worth it. But whatever you decide, one day you will look back and say, oh gee I should have just kept my J and bought a house or invested the money in a Nasdaq or Dow indexed fund. You will get tired of your new car in a few years, and then the cycle of looking for something "better" will start all over again.
Even a used STI is proabably out of your price range but what about a WRX (non-STI)? It should be at least as fast (if not faster) than the Cobalt SS SC.
As Goodwrench said, the Mazdaspeed 3 will, from all reports, be worth waiting for.
If speed is all you care about the SRT-4 is still your best choice.
Oh, the charger on the SS SC is a roots style (like the GM charger).
