First 4wd day of the year...
Thursday, November 24, 2005 1:34 PM
Boy I love having a truck, I passed 17 vehicles in the ditch on the way to work, and two fender benders in a 40 minute drive (which took an hour today).

I get questioned a lot why I keep my old 4x4, but days like today make the $40-50 round trip of gas worth every flippin' penny!

Anyone else get a lot of snow dumped on them last night?

lol gotta love that. I gotta say though, I love it even more when I pass the people in their 4x4s and SUVs in ditches a few minutes after they pass me. Too many people these days dont realize 4WD/AWD doesnt help you stop or keep control lol. Only good for going.

100% agree, that drives me nuts too. That's why my 40 minute drive took me just over an hour, I didn't go over 60km/hr the whole time.

the only 2 vehicles i saw crashed today were a 4x4 durango, and a honda crv. both on "no"-season tires. idiots.

Just like 90% of the rest of the FWD cars on the road. Not bad if you ask me. Just get some snows on the front.

I wish I was home right, now RI and SE Mass got a bit of snow, and I'm stuck out here in SoCal where it never snows. Hopefully when I get home in 3 weeks there will be snow for me to take my truck out in

Yella02-I promise I will return to you in one piece and this will stay up until I am safely home

that has to be the worst winter tire advice i have heard.... and unfortunately i keep hearing it over and over every year.

^^^ Some say that having two winter tires on the front and to all-seasons on the rear, may make the car more likely to fishtail, slip, slide and loose control.

This is true, IF your all-season on the rear are bald, but I went two winters with my Cav having Nordic Icetrac's on the front and Tiger Paw's on the rear, and I think it worked great.

So the whole only two winter tires on the front being dangerous thing, IMO it is just a false.

The real truth is though, there is NO substitute for 4wd in winter. There are days you couldn't dream of getting a car, even with snow tires, near my house, but with the truck I get right into the garage without a problem. Saves me getting my feet wet walking up my 300 yard long up hill driveway.

Thats what i was thinking. Ive been using snow tires only on my front wheels since ive been driving and never had a problem.

this picture is last night about 20 min after it started

This one is this morning at about 10am during the first and only break from the snow

Just remember that 4wd doesn't make you stop faster, or really corner any better.

O noes!

having 2 winter tires and 2 all seasons is unsafe period. even in the dry its unsafe.

all-seasons do not offer much more cold weather/snow/ice traction than summer tires. the compound in all-seasons is only a little better than summer tires when it comes to freezing temps. your braking distances are longer and your rear end will always be trying to pass the front.
even you were dumb enough to run summer tires through the winter at least the car would remain balanced if you were using all 4.

never use only 2.

Ill probably always use only 2 unless i have an awd or rwd vehicle. Never had a problem yet.

Im pretty sure my little 250 hp sentra with damn near race tires would do better with only 2 front snows instead of the four strictly summer tires. Not that im driving it in the snow at all anyways. But you get my point. 2 snows would be better than none if those were my only choices.

And when i say only 2 snow tires, i mean with the other two tires being an all season, not a summer only tire.

an all-season tire is NOT a winter tire. make no mistake.. it will NOT perform at all closely to a winter tire.
my skinnier winter tires grip dry pavement better at below freezing than my wider lower profile summer only tires.

a summer tire loses its traction at about 5degC. an all-season only gains a few degrees. the tread has very little to do with how will the tire grips in the winter... its the compound that does that. a winter tire will remain pliable at far below freezing. a summer only tire can get a an "all-season" rating as long as it has a certain percentage of "void space" in its tread. the compound doesnt even matter... as long as the ration of tread blocks to void is above a certain number they can market the tire as an all-season.

with 2 proper tires on the front and 2 improper tires in the rear, your car is very unstable during cornering and braking. while braking the rear end has even less grip because of the weight transfer, and therefore you cant brake as efficiently. the rear will try to pass the front which puts more stress due to steering input on the front which in turn reduces the amount of braking you can do.

once the rear begins to slide out you have alot of grip at the front to countersteer, but the rear will NOT regain traction as easily and will continue to yaw much more than it would with proper tires.

sure you can drive for a while and not have an accident like this... but all it takes is to be doing 60mph and hit a little patch of hardpack, or ice, and the rear begins to move... and you wont be able to catch it because you have way too much grip at the front in relation to the rear.

i mean i could play russian roulette every day and never make a hole in my head.... but eventually i probably will.....

seriously.... driving with only 2 winter tires is wrong. it has been proven over and over and over... do yourself a favour and get 2 more tires... (and place the 2 newer tires on the back... not the front.)

I agree with the 4wd/awd doesn't help stop, but doesn't help keep control? Are you insaine? Unless your being completely stupid or just really cant drive 4wd/awd will help keep control a ton. RWD you start to go sideways you gotta work your way out of it. Its so easy to come out of a fishtail in AWD. Just counter steer and give a little gas.

I see what you mean. I think a lot of it comes down to if you know how to drive in snow or not also. Ive been doing pizza delivery for the last 3 years as a part-time weekend job with my POS Escort. Ive only put snows on the fronts and driven through many snow storms. Never had a problem, even in emergency manuvers. The only time the ass end ever kicked out is when i grab the trusty fun lever ( E-brake) and i intentionally slide it around. Just comes down to experience as well. All this snow talk makes me wanna go find a snow covered parking lot now lol.
