so, new camaro concept, why not a TA?

ok, so with all of the Camaro talk with GM lately, and the Zeta being restarted, im left wondering what happened to the Trans Am? with GM putting pontiac back in the performance section of the brand names, a V8 sports car would be wonderful. yeah, the GTO's fast, but to me it seems a bit more for someone looking for both a fast car and a family car. well, maybe not family car. but my point is, the GTO is a great addition to the Pontiac line, but it will never replace or fill the shoes of the TA. and why give the camaro the spotlight like that? in the past, the TA has often been the faster of the two stock for stock. and in my opinion it has always looked better. why give the whole market to one of, and with the new challenger both, of your compeditors? yeah, it may eat away at a little of the camaro's sales, but with nothing but sheetmetal and badging as the majority of differences between the two cars, i think they could bring the two our and do just fine. so who's with me? who wants the Trans Am back?

Andy

it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.

let the trans am die and put the V8 in the solstice

I think its cause the Camaro is more of an icon, the camaro always got the spotlight. Every carshow I'm at with old cars the there are usually a ton of old camaros and maybe a couple old T/a's. Personally I like the firebird more, but apearantly I'm one of the few.

i don't really see the point of having a t/a and a GTO, one will do fine, and im not attached to either name, i am attached to rear wheel drive and v8 power.

Just to nitpick...and only because it's bugging me: Camaro is a model, T/A is a trim. Either compare the SS to the T/A, or the Camaro to the Firebird.

That is all...and sorry to nitpick.

Well, I had been reading High Performance Pontiac a while ago, and Bob Lutz basically said that Firebird's time has passed.

The problem with resurrecting the name plate of Camaro or Firebird is that GM MUST build them out of St. Therese Quebec, per agreement with the CDN government (which paid for the overhauling of the plant in the early 80's). If GM doesn't uphold that agreement, GM cars will be levied with heavy tarriffs or GM will have to repay the money at 1982-83 interest rates. GM doesn't need that. It was probably a bad idea in hindsight, to level the plant a year after the F-Bod line was dropped.

If it's not network news, it's probably the truth getting out.

can't we just have the car be a symbol and call it the car formally known as camaro?

It sucks.

I think if the Camaro would be coming back, so should the Firebird.

The GTO is great, don't get me wrong, but the Firebird had a bigger following. It has more of a meaning and more of a legend than the GTO did.

It will be weird not calling the Camaro an F-body anymore. It's an outdated platform anyways I guess.

gam, it was my understanding that theycould build it some where else, after 10 years, of the car being out of production

have you heard anything to this affect?

my wife's parents build the machines that build cars, so i pick up gossip from time to time, not as much as goodwrench, just random stuff from time to time, and i thought this was one of those things

when did the firebird become more of a legend than the GTO?
last time i checked, the GTO was PRETTY MUCH credited with starting the musclecar era...

and one of my magazine's said there are plans for possibly putting a V8 into the soltice...i'll have to find the article.

Thats probably the most ignorant thing I've heard all day. I guess you're right though, we should probably just keep living in the 80's forever...

Anyway, as far as the T/A name goes, I think its one of the most recognizeable and legendary names ever to be designated to a vehicle. I'm talking about the generations from 1969-1981 and 1993-2002, not the crap made in the mid 80's/early 90's. The car just looks muscular and badass, and the screaming phoenix is by far the best symbols ever to grace the body of any vehicle.

I think the phoenix decals just look awesome combined with the muscular lines of the T/A:

If the Camaro ever does make a comeback, they should bring the Firebird with it, because putting that legendary moniker to waste is a terrible thing.
