biggest upside...cobalt ss or ss/sc (2.4 or 2.0)

was wanting to know which model has the biggest upside ....as far as overall performance wise? and if a person bought one, which would be better......paying 20-$24,000 for the supercharged model or paying 16-$18000 for the 2.4, which meaning in all reality you would still have about 5-6 grand you could sink into mods to reach the performance peak of the 2.0.was really wanting to know because im sorta torn between the two.

at this time there are no mods for the 2.4ss id go with the supercharged theres factory performance upgrades coming for it as well as more of an aftermarket and it looks better too, oh yea and with the factory compression ratio of the 2.4VVT motor boosting it is a really bad idea because its too high to start with, can you say detonation?

There is a guy on cobaltss.net runing a 15 flat with the 2.4. There are some running a 14.4 with the 2.0SC. So if speed is what you are looking the 2.4 + turbo would be the way to go.

If you want a warranty and a nice interior and better handeling go for the SS/SC.

Matt the 2.4 could run low boost 5-6 psi without any worries. Honda's run the same compression and they run boost too. Plus I am almost positive that 2.4 head might flow better then the SC head so a turbo would really bump your power up.

As long as you use premium 94 gas, I don't see there being a problem.

The Cobalt SS comes with a factory LSD, and really good leather Recaro Seats... it's your choice.

wouldnt the internals of the 2.4 be a bit weaker than the SS 2.0? 2.4 is probably a high compression ratio to right?

I'd say go with the 2.0 Supercharged. Its just got more potential, seeing as its F/I from the factory and comes stock with forged internals and a lower compression ratio. There are also more mods available for the 2.0, seeing as its the best performing version of the Cobalt from the factory. Guys on CobaltSS.net have been putting down an additional 10-15WHP with just an intake, and rumor is that GM will be releasing Stage kits similar to the Mopar kits for the SRT-4, which means HP numbers approaching 300.

The 2.4 SS is also a nice car, but theres just no as much potential, unless of course you turbo it. But then you have the high compression ratio and tuning issues to deal with, and you probably won't be making much more power than if you just bought an SS S/C for the same price when you factor in the turbo kit. The SS S/C also has the performance suspension, as well as the S/C specific interior with color coded leather seats, boost guage, and Poineer sound system.

Good luck, either way you go though you'll still be getting a great car

2.0 has forged internals
but if you wanted to build an engine for power, id say 2.4 destroked to lower compression
forged internals and turbo

I test drove both, and I'd say go with the SS-SC because it handles better stock, is already made for boost, plus has colour coded seats. It would end up costing more in parts and problems tuning a 2.4 turbo (although it would be cool) and upgrading the suspension.

if you want a 2.4 turbo buy the ss sc and then buy a 2.4 crank and 2.4 rods. then youll have a turbo 2.4 that is programmed for boost. you guys gotta remember that the ecos use the same block for all 3 motors, so the parts are interchangeable. if you plan on boosting, def get the ss sc

the 2.4 has forged internals , just like the 2.0 does

and SAPPY , you dont destroke to lower compression , you change the pistons dome size , or open the combustion chamber on the head , or a thinker head gasket

destroke , lower the size of the motor , which is what the 2.0 is , a destroked 2.2

This is one of those things I guarantee is just a rumor.

Personally I dig the VVT running turbo/low boost.....plus to me the 2.4 version of the SS looks a lot better, no ricey spoiler, and more subtle 17's versus those gawdy 18's. Just my opinion though.

joe you hate my car ... im getting rid of the spoiler here very soon, 18's look ok, but i really want some volks... and i pulled a 14.4 @ 97 with my 2.0 sc slobalt, and there are stages coming out for them but i dont think its up to the 300hp mark more like 250ish hp, but i have never drove a 2.4 so im just one sided on this hole topic cause i love the way my car handles also the fact it can run 14.4 and still get 34-35mpg (hwy)

I'm not hating on the S/C version at all, I would own one in a heartbeat. Just don't like that spoiler and felt the 17's fitted the car better when I first saw a 2.4VVT SS! Personally I'd probably buy the S/C version as I am a sucker for blower whine.

I still <3 you Brandon.
