Mazda will launch a metal folding hardtop version of the MX-5 in September 2006, featuring a three-piece folding roof grafted onto the bodywork of Mazda’s two-seat roadster.
Developed in-house by Mazda rather than by an outside coachworks, and likely to be badged MX-5 Hardtop, the new model is targeted at buyers of the growing numbers of coupe-convertible models.
Apart from the new roof and its mechanism, the MX-5 fundamentally remains unchanged. The Hardtop will ride on the same wheelbase, have the same size cabin and feature the same rear overhang. The extra bulk of the metal folding roof will likely eliminate much of the car’s trunk space when folded down. The mechanism is sure to add weight compared to the manual folding soft-top, but the amount is unknown. Such drawbacks are likely to be ignored by many buyers attracted by the metal roof’s greater resistance to vandalism, sense of security and refinement at cruising speeds. Look for the Hardtop to add $2,000 to $3,000 to the MX-5’s sticker price.

i was kinda wondering when something like this was gonna happen
i bet mazda was waiting to see what GM was doing with the solstice/sky's
I think its a wicked idea! I think theyre "cute" cars. Not for me but theyre nice. And Im not a fan of soft tops really. I think they should come out with an upgraded engine as well, because that is sure to add a lot of weight

a heavier engine in this car would be a BAD idea. they handle amazingly well off the showroom floor. why would you want to weigh it down? they are one of the MOST ideal autocross cars i've ever seen.
don't like me?
tell me what you think of me in chat
yeah i read an article in motor trend and they compared the mx-5 to the solstic... guess who won...
*hint: not GM!!!
if you want more power out of a miata just turbo it
a hard top would be friggin awesome
anyone who calls these girls cars are just retards

MAZDA TO EXHIBIT NEW MAZDA MX-5 MIATA WITH POWER RETRACTABLE HARD TOP AT THE BRITISH INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW
IRVINE, Calif. — Mazda Motor Corporation will make the global debut of the Mazda MX-5 Miata Power Retractable Hard Top at the 2006 British International Motor Show in London, England. Since its launch in 1990, and with subsequent generations launched in 1999 and 2006, MX-5 Miata has always been available with an optional removable hardtop, but this is the first time the car will be available with a power-operated retractable hard top.
The British International Motor Show will be held in London from Tuesday, July 18, through Sunday, July 30, 2006.
Featuring a new, unique power retractable hard top roof, this is an all-new addition to the third-generation Mazda MX-5 which launched in late 2005 as a 2006 model. This new Mazda MX-5 provides a unified sense of driving exhilaration, ready to spread the fun of lightweight sports cars in diverse and distinct new ways, regardless of the weather.
“Jinba Ittai”—or ’rider and horse as one’ is the essence of Mazda MX-5, the expression reflecting the emotional connection between a horse and rider.
Along with the global debut of the MX-5 Power Retractable Hard Top, the Mazda Sassou and Kabura concept vehicles will also be shown.
Mazda will hold a press conference on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at 11:45 a.m. (British Summer Time).
Mazda MX-5 with a power retractable hard top roof will be known by different names around the world:
North America: Mazda MX-5 Power Retractable Hard Top
Europe: Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupe
Japan: Mazda Roadster Power Retractable Hard Top

I wish they would have done that with the S2K. I always thought that the S2K was the ultimate roadster. I am bias to Honda though.
Nothing like winding a car up to it's 9K redline!
Definately nice though. I can see a lot of people using those to turn into spec Miatas for road race/auto x cars.

Updating this...
Mazda rep said it will be about a $1500 option. Best of all, all this hardware will only increase 70lbs.
How does the car look? Damn... it looks good, every design aspect flows. Rigidity is better to with top up too with all the security to boot. Taking this car through the cones only brings smiles.
Wow to Mazda!

Looks sweet. Everyone seems to have the fiberglass top, but that doesn't work with the roll bars. This is a definate improvement.
I always thought that when the Mazda Rx7 was disconinued that Mazda would make a hardtop Miata coupe, like how BMW did with the Z3. It would make one heck of a great auto-x car, but might ruin the miata's image of a sporty roadster.
