Okay, a couple days ago, I've run into some problems with my camry (since it's a replacement car for my CRX for deliveries, it HAS to run properly). Naturally, first thing I check is the oil, it's got oil, a little dark but still good. Well... I'll tell you guys the symptoms (they're in the order they happened)
1: The transmission felt weak, I could no longer feel the "twitch" of it going into drive. It vibrates every time I accelerated out of a turn.
2: The first symptom got worse, and I have to rev it to about 3000 RPM to get going slowly (immitates my driving standard). It vibrates pretty badly between 20 and 30 kph if I try to accelerate too hard (yet if I dont, the car dont move). After 30 kph, it stops vibrating and it runs perfectly, I can get it to go as fast as I want like before.
3: Gears started to go. I no longer have reverse (it acts like a second park, the car rolls forward, if on a hill, and then stops) and now Neutral is gone too (meaning I cant push it back out of a parking spot). If I hit the gas while in neutral, it revs up to about 3500 RPM and then accelerates with far more speed than if I were in the lowest gear O.o
After the third symptom, I stopped driving it in fear of the transmission going completely. All this happened in a period of about 2 days. No racing, no hard accelerations (wastes too much gas, and gets me tickets). Can someone tell me what the possible problem is? The guy who's fixing my CRX said it may be because of some valve thing (it's an auto). Thank god the CRX will be done tomorrow by noon. Here's some of the things I do that I think MAY be the culprit:
1: I do accelerate hard sometimes, not often though. Like I said, wastes gas.
2: I slam the brakes hard as well, not often either, just to kinda keep friends awake. Not enough to lock the wheels.
3: A few months ago I accidentally put the car into park while we were still moving at about 5 or 10 kph.
4: When on a delivery on a dirt road with a dead end, I reef the E-brake and spin around. Probably killer on the differential.
5: I did shift the car manually for a while about 2 weeks ago (thats how badly I wanted a standard car again), each time I shifted, I let off the gas.
Also, I tried to see if it may be the OD gears, so I turned the overdrive off, drove it to the next light. same problems. Then I tried some "ECT" button my car has (the manual states "norm" mode is for gas saving, and "pwr" mode is for better acceleration), yet again, same problem, except the second symptom wasnt as bad... for a while.
Someone please help.
forgot to mention after the gears started to go, the second symptom stopped. The car runs fine in drive again. But like I said, reverse no longer works, and neither does neutral.
Haha, dude, not to poke fun but your tranny is all F'ed up.
If you no longer have a reverse, or a neutral, then you've got some major problems.
My guesstimate is a transmission overhaul.
Sorry to hear about your troubles.
yeah, my guess is my manual shifting played a huge part in it
it's only got 170,000 km on it though...
you manually shifted an automatic??
dude.
dude...dude...dude. NEVER MANUALLY SHIFT AN AUTOMATIC! that's ASKING to rebuild or replace your trans - and that's exactly what you're going to have to do in this case. let this be a lesson to you(and please, use that as proof for your friends if they do the same). i'm sorry you had to learn the hard way, because this will be an expensive repair.
don't like me?
tell me what you think of me in chat
^ I wouldn't really make a blanket statement like don't manually shift an auto. There are more and more sport-shifts coming to the market which is exactly what they are meant to be doing.
That being said. Just because it has D, 3, 2, and maybe even 1, does NOT mean its supposed to be driven like that. The sport-shifts are a different beast altogether. Certainly the Camry, never has had this feature.
Whether or not this caused the problem or not, it certainly didn't help it. Bottom line, i agree with the consensus that the tranny is most likley going to need an overhaul of some sort. Not having R or N, is definetly pointing to something being majorly wrong.
yeah... thank god my CRX is fixed now... too bad the little @!#$ who put it together (the guy lives with me, he was workin on it with someone else so he could learn about motors) didnt do somethin right. When I went to work today, the damn alternator pulley fell off. I ended up running over it comin in. good thing it was about 5 feet away from where I parked.
but... yeah... the guy who helped my room mate fix my car might have a look at my camry too. this is gonna suck
Try a couple of different additives for your transmission. like the lucas tranny additive and maybe something for tourque converter lock-up. It almost sounded like your converter was slipping causing the bad vibrations and the high reving without going anywhere.
These may help but it sounds like its time for a major overhaul.
This is not a permanent fix, but try adding a cap full of brake fluid to the trans fluid. It will swell out the bands and you may get reverse back. BUT ONLY DO THIS AS A LAST RESORT AND IF YOU KNOW OR ARE ABOUT TO HAVE THE TRANS OVERHAULED OR REPLACED.
