Wondering about future mustangs
Thursday, November 03, 2005 9:12 AM
I was thinking for a while now, why did the 4.0 in the new mustangs come out with nearly identical power figures as the truck-bound versions? I mean, typically the mustang's engines would be in a higher state of tune and produce more power.

My thoughts led me to think about the new 3.5 coming out for the 500 and Lincoln's version of the fusion(250hp); I'm thinking this engine will find a home in the mustang as well.

Does anyone else think this will happen? I just think it was strange when the 4.0 came out with basically the same output as truck versions, and barely higher than the old 3.8.

So, opinions?

I read some where thatthey didnt want owners of the previous gen mustangs to feel like they had a car that has become completly obsolete. as well as to add better fuel efficiency

Mustangs will never look as good as they when the 99-04 gen was out.

i take it you are talking about the 6 cyl engine
because the v8 is 4.6
which is the same output as the truck motors about

anybody that thinks the old "flying brick" fox body style is the best mustang is crazy. the newset mustang is the first to deserve the name in a very long time.

The new Mustang is boring.

Love the powertrain, hate the look.

Sappy: Yes, I am talking about the 6. The 4.6 doesn't make the same power as the trucks either, it makes the same power as the 5.4 truck engine.

I'm not talking about the looks here or the "Mustangs are @!#$" arguments, I'm just talking about future powertrains, Please try to keep this on track

OMG TEH 5.0 IS L3ET

In 1987 the 5.0 put out an average of 225hp.
In 2005 the V6 puts out about 200hp

Thats only 25 hp less with 2 less cylinders.

But to stay on topic i think its too early to say what will happen. They may offer 3 engine choices like they have in the past esp. due to gas prices.

....yeah, and almost 20 years of technology behind it. What's your point?

I'm skeptical about that; You'll never see another 4 in a mustang(Mostly because they've grown much heavier), and I can't really see them offering 2 different 6's, because the people who buy sixes typically don't really care about power, and people who want it spring for the 8.

I can definately see a new 6 with good efficiency though, to bring up economy on the majority of them.

On a side note, I drove a 3.8 5spd for a few days once, and it actually burned less gas than my 2.4. Maybe that one was a freak, but I was hella impressed.

On paper, I don't know. I do know, however, that my 2.4 usually gets 33 mpg average(atleast every time I tested it it did), and the mustang bettered that - A friend and I put just over 300 km's on it, and at the end it only took $15 cdn gas. Gas was somewhere around $.80/litre at the time, give or take; That calculates out to 37.59 MPG(US gallons).

I know the vette(And 6spd F bodies) are excellent at 30 mpg, but I'm still impressed.

Base model Mustang (V6) is said to get 19/28 MPG. That is from Ford's website.

Less than LS1 6-speed cars.

Damnit! we need an edit button...

I forgot to add, That mileage was combined city/highway, and with us walking on the car all the time... burnouts, testing with my Gtech, that type of @!#$(hey, I was young at the time... still am, but moreso at that time)
