You may or may not have read my previous post, but I got a ticket a little while ago for "speed racing/exhibition". BS or not, I went to court today, and the judge was only willing to drop the ticket from $421 to $316. And the charges stayed. Which means my insurance is gonna go up, bigtime. And since I bought my J new a couple months ago, it's already pretty high in itself. Put that together, and suddenly I can't afford my car.
So, I'm looking for what I want next. Right now I owe $6500 on my car, and the Kellie Blue Book is $8500, so I can still trade it off and not worry about payments carrying over. Anyways, my next car. I've got a few things in mind.
First of all, it has to be cheap to insure. Secondly, I don't think I want anything over $5-6K (before the extra $2000 from my trade in). I also want something that won't set me up for another ticket. Not that I don't trust myself, but the farther away from that kind of position I am, the better.
My main ideas were a mid-late 90's Ranger or S10, a 2001 PT Cruiser, or a mid-late 90's somewhat upscale sedan (Buick Century, Volvo something or other, etc) or a lesser sedan (Grand Am, Grand Prix, etc).
Any comments/suggestions? Reliability issues with any of these, pros and cons?

First off your not going to get that extra 2000 for your car when you trade it in. KBB Is a GUIDE, you won't get what they say it is worth. YOu don;t know for sure if your paymnets are gonna be "Carried Over" until you get the car appraised at the actual dealer. As far as getting into a different vehicle, the only one that you might be able to get into for the kind of money that you want to spend is gonna be a mid-to late s-10 or ranger, all the other vehicles that you are looking at, are gonna have an ass load of miles on them if you do decide to get one. As far as either one being cheaper on insurance, call your insurance and see what would be the best vehicle to get into.
I am what I am and it is what it is.
I am the 2nd most untrusted person in the world next to a lawyer, welcome to our dealership, may I help you?
I think it is wise to get rid of the car and get something you can pay for in cash.

That's another possibility I've been thinking of. And I know the leftover money would help with college and general life stuff. Any specific suggestions? Something enjoyable, hopefully reliable, and that wouldn't encourage me to be bad. IE DSM's, Fox Bodies (although I can get a mint 80,000 mile slightly modded '84 20th Anniversary GT Hatch for less than $3000) and the like probably aren't too good of any idea.

MoPed? or scooter. Them you cant race.
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
refinance your car, and don't race/speed anymore on the streets
other cars, better cars?
Refinancing my car won't change anything. Car payments are easy ($150/month), it's the insurance that gets me. Right now, it's already $1000/6 months. With the ticket, it'll shoot up to at least $1800/6 months, which pushes me over the financial limit. And only having had my car for just over 6 months, I haven't cut enough off the cost for refinancing to change my payments (I've paid $1050 out of the $7500 financed)
I rarely sped anyways, it was 11 o'clock on my way to a friend's house going somewhere between 35 and 45 on a 25 (cop didn't clock me, he says it was closer to 45, I know it wasn't), right after coming off of a 35 road. And I haven't gone over the speed limit once since.

1000 for six months isnt bad i pay 1100 for my car. for like level 3 insurance
dude your insurance might not go up that much, but do whatever u gotta to get the premium down take a safe driver course take the coverage down a bit get a weekend job, do something
-Borsty
be glad thats all you paid to begin with. I currently pay 1500 every 6 months on a clean record. but yea, like Borsty said, a safe driver course helps a little bit. I just took it and its going to drop my insurance about 150$
minivans are the cheapest to insurace of any type of vehicle.....
but if you don't want the mom mobile im thinking buick regal, or chevy aveo
As far as kelly blue book value, the dealership I used to work at honored NADA values, which are pretty close to KBB. Not all dealerships are crooked, just the ones that are either really greedy or scraping by to stay in business.

Get something old so you have no payments and then get the cheepest you can find.

I say you reap the consequences of your act. Extra job required would be the easiest idea. Part time the weekends - if your working, you can't be out being an idiot and street racing.

did you read his first post? its kinda a BS ticket...."Ummm sir, you took that corner a little to fast for my liking, therefore your street racing" yeah, Bull. is this your first/only ticket? its possible your insurance wont go up at all. i know when i got my speeding ticket, my 1st/only ticket, my insurance didnt go anywhere, stayed at the same rate....
KBB is usually higher than NADA. If you can find a good deal you may be able to trade out pretty even. Grand Am's have cheap insurance for some reason.. even coupe's.
S10 is a good choice IMO. I would also look at older model Jeeps. Wrangles are slow so you won't be racing one even if you tried, great summer fun, and chicks like em. But from what you listed I would take an S10 with a 4.3 or a 350 swap.
you could always get a ford escort wagon
it will certainly humble you
and youll learn that driving fast is a privilege when it comes to some cars because it takes 10 minutes to get to 60
Let me clear up a couple things....
First, I already work two jobs, and I'm barely scraping by. Rent, car payment, insurance, you all know how it all adds up.
Second, I'm not an idiot, and I wasn't street racing. Well, maybe I was an idiot for speeding in the first place, but it was a bit of a BS ticket, and my first one in the three years I've had my license, which should probably tell you something.
Third, a Jeep actually does somewhat appeal to me. I'll definitely keep that in mind.
So I guess I'll have to see how my insurance changes, if at all. Even if it doesn't, I may end up getting rid of my car. I mean, $350/month ($150 payment, $166 insurance, $50 gas) just for my car is a little excessive. Oh well, we'll see how it all starts unfolding. I'll keep y'all updated.

Youll have to be sure not to whip that Jeep around corners like your car, or youll never be able to post (or breathe) again
Hope everything works out

Yeah, just play it by ear for now.....you never know, your insurance might not be that bad!
Good luck, seems to me you have a good head on your shoulders and your not making any excuses for you getting a ticket.
good luck

Spiffy...shame shame.
ok, no lecture. want a cheap, reliable, nice-on-the-insurance car? 94 Corolla. yes, i laud these cars - but it's true. they are cheap, they sip gas(1.6 liters of fury!), they WILL run forever, and insurance loves them for some reason. with 2 accidents and 3 tickets on my record, i pay $1200/year. yes, per year...for full coverage. look into these as an option, as they are very easy to find used.
don't like me?
tell me what you think of me in chat
It doesn't matter what car you buy, if you speed, you'll speed. Anything that moves can be raced so you're not safe with any car. It does not matter what you drive, it's all in your head. And instead of waiting to see what will happen with your insurance, call them and find out.
Is that a...a...a... a Cavalier?
suddently my insurance doesn't look so bad.
[borsty] 3rd Gen F-body is the only way to go [/borsty]
^Hey they are cheap, but id go v6 for your insurance sake
as said earlier if this is your first offence your insurance might not do anything. i know mine didnt do anything when i got in a fender bender (Nationwide, FYI) and they said as long as i didnt screw up at all for the next 3 years my rates would be the same. So this september will be 3 years with nothing gone wrong so *crosses fingers
faln suggestion seems the best to me after that. i will laud 1995-1997 w bodies instead though, the Lumina, Gran Prix, Cutlass, are decent cars, even the base 3100 shows decent power with resonable gas mileage, and they are pretty reliable in my expieriance, with the exception of my cutlass (RIP). but i think that was the previous owners fault. My dads lumina just had the tranny rebuilt at 200k miles and thats just about the only work its had done to it, and he only changes his oil every 6K miles. you can probably pick one of those up with fairly cheap.
Things to watch for when buying, squeeking cv joints, brakes, plus common sense things.
just get a beater car. i picked up a 91 integra for 800 bucks just to drive to work and that thing runs great. if you get a cheap car to just drive around then, one you dont have to pay payments on it, two you can just get liablity insurance on it so it will be even cheaper
