What did the 4-bolt rear end come in? Any easy way to tell the difference between 3 and 4 bolt?

man.. whats with all these dsm questions lately? www.dsmtuners.com or www.dsmtalk.com Those guys know there stuff, just do a search there and I'm sure you'll find what you need. They are about as responsive as people on here, so you could ask and have an answer in minutes.

You gotta be a member to search at dsmtuners and I only have free email accounts which you can't register with there.

k, from what I've found. the 4 bolt rears are in the 92.5-99 GSX's. 3 bolt rears are in the earlier 90-91 GSX's. As for how to tell the difference, there's no real easy way, just make sure you know what year car you're looking at. Hope that helps.

Ok thanks alot man. I'm looking at a 90 talon. I'm going to have to ask the guy what he knows about it.

The 4 bolt is supposed to be somewhat stronger than the 3 bolt, i guess it'd be equivelent to a ford 9" rear end comparativly

They don't call it a 3 or 4 bolt because tht's the number of bolts holding the cover on. They call it that because that's the number of bolts on the axle flanges.

Here's a good link on how to swap rear ends.

The only option on rear end (other differences being year) is the LSD. Those are clearly marked if you can find one. They are also kinda rare. If a DSM has a LSD then it will say so right on the serial plate. Crawl under and look, that's the rear you're looking for.

Good luck.

rare? every dsm i have ownedcame with the stock lsd, im pretty sure if you have an awd you either have lsd or abs. thats what i hear at least.
and borsty, my little 4 bolt rear end held up pretty well against all 3 ls1's and both ls2's i walked at the track last weekend. oh well i guess they just need more boost and nitrous.

Every DSM I have owned or worked on has had ABS and no LSD... Maybe it's an area thing. People likely preferred ABS here because of our winter. Maybe the LSD was more popular in the south.. All I know is I have yet to see the LSD marking on a DSM in real life, only pictures. Many "phantom" thingies installed up here.

You're talking the AWD versions correct?

Is there any other ?

Yes.. I'm pretty sure the FWD DSMs don't have a rear differential

My 96 does not have a LSD, so certainly not all 2G DSMs have it. I know the Phantom Grip was discussed a lot in the club back when I was active.

I know they are labelled, and I know I haven't seen one. That's all I can be 100% sure of.

you have LSD in front wheel drive cars, you never said it was just in the rear.
