"Extreme Custom" Cobalt - Note the Quota
Thursday, October 20, 2005 7:53 PM
First off, let me preface this by saying I am not bashing the Cobalts in any way, shape or form. Nor am I knocking any of the products on this car, other than the monstrosity that sits on the hood. Any one who has seen my posts know that I'm a fan of the Cobalts...nor am I looking to start a meaningless flame war with anybody on the net. Being on this site for a couple of years has taught me alot about the modding world, even if my own car is still bone stock. Maybe I have a right to speak my mind on this or maybe I don't since my car isn't modded. All I really want from the -faithful on this issue is if they believe this car is worth the $21,010 that this dealership is wanting for this Cobalt. Also I know my digi-cam is a piece of crap and the pics aren't that great, I plan to get one in the future...but for now this all I got. Also, I am not interested in buying this Cobalt and now here's the back story.

A few hours ago, I was in town with my bestfriend and we decide to stop off at this local Chevy dealership. She knows that I'm interested in getting a Cobalt in the near future so we check out a few. They had a couple LT and LS sedans and one SS Supercharged coupe that they want almost $27,000 for. Well in any case we keep walking until we come up on this white Cobalt coupe. Naturally this Cobalt is different as it has a differentiating bodykit among other things. As we get closer, I realize that this is the LS Coupe (base) with the Razzi Kit (which I think is a sharp lip kit), however this dealership is passing this Cobalt off has an "Extreme Custom (package)" Cobalt. This "Extreme Cobalt" features the following items: Razzi ground effects with mesh and faux dual exhaust, Eibach lowering springs, Ventshades, 17" wheels and tires and a stick on hood scoop. Here are the pics below...

For this "Extreme Package" this dealership is charging almost $5,400 for this thing and the rest of the car is still stock, meaning no options or anything else. The car includes spoiler and auto tranny for $15,615 but when you add in (what I feel is a ridiculous price) the package price that brings the total cost of this Cobalt LS to $21,010 which I feel is way too expensive for this Cobalt and anybody who knows anything half way decent about the modding scene could actually buy a LS Cobalt and have all this done (and with an actual functioning hood scoop) for probably half (if not less) than what this dealership is charging for this kit. The sad reality is however is that this dealership will find some jabroni, for a lack of a better term, and swindle this poor kid out of $21,000 plus financing...so I have to ask this question...

Do you really believe this Cobalt is worth $21,000?

I surely don't.

to someone who knows nothing about cars, but wants one that looks....stupid... yeah that would be worth 21 Gs to them....now to someone who would rather to it themselves, no, definatly not....

body kit 500-1000 on ebay
paint.....500
wheels....700(what the dealer paid most likely)
dual exhaust 300 ish

not worth it.

i would say about 17maybe 16k

More info...

I forgot to even consider labor on the vehicle but I know this dealership has a working relationship with a bodyshop that's near them so I don't believe they got hit hard for labor costs but I could be wrong. Also the kit, while it does look nice...there's a problem of a minor gap on each side of the of kit. Is this normal with most lip kits or was this kit no fitted properly?

The rear looks nice, the front is ok, I guess.. The stuck on hood scoop is frigging joke.. Looks like one of those things you can pick up at wal-mart. The rims aren't that great either. It says it's lowered? It doesn't look like it to me, I'd be poking my head in the wheewells to make sure the aftermarket springs are even there.. What a frigging joke.. I'll never understand why GM's dealers are the only one to "rice" out grocery getters, and expect top dollar for them! I don't see any Honda/Mazda/Toyota dealers in my area doing that.. :/

lone_wolf, if this car is lowered, it's not by much as you can see by the picture there is still some significant wheel gap on that car, it was more apparent in person. I am amazed that this dealership slapped such a high price for a base Cobalt. Also it is my understanding that this isn't even an approved Chevy/GM package kit...that this was something this dealership done to drive up the price of this car knowing they'll find someone uninformed about the modding world who will buy it in an instance because they think it's "cool." I just wish I could be there to see the person who does buy it.

Sucks to see the dealership throw that kind of a hood scoop on it. The front looks so-so but I am loving the rear end. I think it is cool looking.

Have a good one,
Justin

i bet one of the exhaust pipes is not hooked up too..its just a dummy pipe to make it look like its got duel exhaust...thats how the caavy's were at the dealers around here with the "extreme custom" dealer package...

Re:

The sideskirts and rear look ok, but like ALL razzi kits the front looks like ASS.

For 21k that is a rippoff I agree man. You can get an non supercharged SS and put a razzi kit on it for that much minus the wheels and tacky hood scoop.

I love the white however. Sad thing is someone WILL buy that thing!

Re:

ive seen other dealers other than gm do this type of thing. it was common in miami to find honda/nissan/mazda/toyota dealers doing the same sort of thing around the time that sport compact modding really hit its peak a few years ago with the same sort of price. i remember looking at a 2001 civic back then that was really nicely done actually but the prices they charge are a bit rediculous

Re:
Friday, October 21, 2005 7:25 AM
I kinda like the rear and sides of that kit tho

and 5 grand tacked on to the price is alot for what they did

Re:
Friday, October 21, 2005 2:46 PM
Back end looks good! $21K......don't think so! I would get a 06 Civic Si instead. And the same dealership is asking almost $27K for an SS Supercharged!?

Re:

Those dont look like 17" rims to me. Maybe thats me thought alot of wheel gap for 17's and lowered

It's not a real dual exhaust set up. It's similar to the exhaust set up for the Cavalier Razzi Kits. I think a non-functioning exhaust tip is included with the lip kit and if a person's car doesn't have a dual exhaust set up, they can slap that bad boy on to complete the look. Naturally of course this dealership detailed this as a dual-exhaust setup and what uninformed buyer is going to check and see if both exhausts work right? I mean after all they are charging for the mesh that comes with the lip kit (I believe) as if it's something extra they did.

The kit is nice looking for the most part but up close it just kinda looks like they didn't take their time putting the kit on. I mean it looks good and all but there's a slight "black space" on the sides of the front lip was either the kit is not holding properly or wasn't adhered to the bumper or whatever they do to attach lip kits. White is nice, but something my bestfriend pointed out to me is was that the white on the lip kit is brighter than the white on the car. When I saw the car, I was thinking that I could buy the LT(2) Coupe they had near it...slap on a decent body kit (when one comes out) and be done with it and still have money left over performance mods if I was someone looking to buy Cobalt at the time.

Actually they want $21,000 for the "Extreme Custom" base Cobalt and almost $27,000 for the SS Supercharged Cobalt Coupe (not making this up Tribals lol), but in all fairness I should say the SS Supercharged is loaded with the racing performance package, XM/Onstar, the optional airbags, and a sunroof but that only adds up to about $25,500 or so...which means they put about $1,000 (or more) of markup on the car.

I will need to go back out later tonight, so I'll take my cam with me and try to get better pics of the rear for those who liked it. I didn't used my flash because of the light around the car and everything showed up okay but when the pics transferred to my PC some of the light went away. I'll try using the flash tonight and see how it turns out.

I'm doing nothing tomorrow however, I'm very tempted to go to this dealership, playing the naive fool, and let them sling all the b-s they are going to sling at me with this "extreme" Cobalt.

This is the worst thread EVER!
Alot of companies have there own dealer rice and not a single one of the prebuilt brand ricecars are worth. they put a lip kit on a Jetta at work and jacked the price up like $4,000... everyone does and it will never be worth it

Re:

The chevy dealership where I bought my car at did something similar to a 2004 Cavalier base 2-door coupe and tried pass it off with an inflated price tag( $17,000+). The car occupied the showroom for several months as I saw it ever time I came in for an oil change. The last time I saw the car, it was priced at $10,000 and change. The body kit that was installed on this particular Cavalier had poor fit and finish. They kept the base wheel/hup caps on the car too. And it had the white paint job and the fake hood scoops. If seeing that Cavalier did anything for me, it further deterred me from wanting to customize the car externally with bogus, tacked on hood scoops and ill fitting body kit. I think the dealer was trying to make a quick buck and pass it off as something special which it wasnt.

If Don Yenko were still alive, would be ashamed of what passes off these days as dealer installed "mods". What do anyone here think the a Don Yenko modified Cobalt would have been like?
