help with battery cutoff
Sunday, May 02, 2010 1:20 PM
I moved the battery of my car to the trunk for extra space in the engine bay. So now for the 1/4 mile I will need to run a cutoff switch. I know in addition to the main battery cable I need to run the wire that goes from the starter to the alternator to the switch or ill fry the ecu. My question is instead of running that all the way back can I just switch the ground wire instead of the positive stuff?

You can't switch the ground because the whole car body/ chassis becomes the ground for your car when you relocate the battery and no way to have a switch to shut off the ground. The other reason is because to do your grounds correctly, you should have at least two grounding points on the vehicles body to eliminate ground loops or different ground potentials on the body.

If you need information on how to do the switch and relocation correctly, let me know and I can provide links.
