STICKY!! - Estimate your 1/4 mile time here - STICKY!!

If you have your hp (flywheel or wheel) and the cars weight you can get a very close estimate of your 1/4 mile time. It assumes a 17% drive train loss automatically.

1/4 Time Calculator

No offense, but that is a terrible 1/4 mile calculator. Even ignoring important things like wheel spin and coef of drag, it is still a bad calculator. You can't accurately measure time just by knowing peak horsepower ratings. Without knowing the area under the power curve within each gear itself, as well as shift times between gears, no calculator could ever give a "very close estimate." Gearing is equally as important to racing as horsepower.

...so no. This should never be stickied.

Using the last one....
2775 lbs
320 hp

time: 12.532397791437555 secs

I'd say that last one worked pretty good The real time was 12.536 so 12.532 is a close enough estimate for me.

I used to race cars, now I race myself.

well based on the last calculator and some reverse figuring since i've never dynoed. with my car weighing in at 3175 with half tank and me in it and my 1/4 mile time of 15.35 my car with i/h/e makes 200 flywheel hp. sick. not accurate at all.

Me....back in 2005
3056 lb
160WHP
Best (15.465@88.446) Real life

first link...15.47
Second...16.55
Third...15.57@87.55
Fourth...16.305

The first or third seem ok.

going back through the first and third came out close to the same with 175 flywheel horse but that still seems high for my mods. second one was worst than the last at 205 flywheel hp

Re: STICKY!! - Estimate your 1/4 mile time here - STICKY!!
Tuesday, January 20, 2009 9:44 AM
actual time: 15.647
WHP: 121
estimated at 3100 lbs

first: 17.17201941664808
second: 18.251511679168555
third: 17.172 seconds
fourth: 17.982715612283826

not very close for me at all....

to get my actual time using only the fourth one, my car would have to weigh 2050 lbs and ave 121 hp at the wheel. or it would have to weigh 3100 lbs and have 185 WHP...

I think the biggest mistake you can make with these calculators is guessing at the weight. If all you got to plug into the equation is weight and HP to get an ET, then those two numbers have to be dead accurate. Otherwise the percentage either is off will be how far off your ET estimate is off.
True it is an estimate, but Pro Racers have used this equation for decades. It's not a substitute for the track, dyno, or scales. Just points you in the right direction.
For me, it helps to figure out what I need to make it into 12s, then 11s, and maybe 10s. And really that's all you should use it for.

But, I thought it would stop the noobs from posting up "I have these mods, what should I run?" or "I drive this, this guy drives that...Who will win?"

That's the one I've always used and it's proved fairly accurate. My traps are almost always consistent with the dyno numbers i've acquired in the past. The times are not as it accounts for traction in a perfect world which isn't even close on a fwd cavy Aside from that it's usually trap speeds that determine horsepower, not ETs

Last one was not accurate said I had like 220hp when I ran a 15.2,lol but Airtonics link seemed more accurate,15.2@85mph=191hp using Et and 187hp using speed method.

I put in 2680 lbs. (base model weight) and 140 hp. for the ecotec. All of them said mid 16's except the try # 3 one, which was mid 15's and thats what most people seem to be able to run in stock ecotec 5 speeds the others were way too slow

just fyi

Airtonics link was pretty close with mine as well. 160 hp with 15.47 and 161 with 88.25 trap speed... I put in 3000 lbs, just a guess, but I assume its close.

Even a @!#$ty driver who botches a launch usually traps about the same speed. As I said earlier horsepower is better determined by trap speeds.

For example, on street tires after my engine build my car ran 13.6@112mph, on drag radials I ran 12.7@111.99.... I didn't gain any horsepower between the runs I was just able to hook up better with better tires. After I dyno again this next season I'll compare my traps with that same link again and I'm willing to bet the numbers I make and what it says I should for my car weighing 2856 w/ driver it's about spot on...
