a couple of people told me that these cars are capable of 15s stock, but would an automatic be able to do that? i see alot of 5spd timeslips here.

I dont think a vert would be able to get to the 15's. Especially with the automatic without any mods.
ooo. my friend's 97 or 98 z24 vert felt pretty decent but that was also 4 years ago or more!

I have a 96 LS 4 door with a 2.4 and auto, with only a wai, manifold back exhaust, and upper insert and got a 15.938@85mph on my first ever night at the track, i imagine it can be done with a better driver and less mileage car in bone stock condition.
I have a 5-speed.... and I could only get about a 15.8 at best out of it when it was mostly stock....... 16.2 being most common...... an auto is prob a little slower... both they don't feel like it.....
as far as verts...... I'm not sure about 3rd gens... but on 2nd gens..... verts where extremely slower....
i had a 96 Z24 auto but it was a hard top i got a 15.89@89mph out of it my bro had a 96 LS 4 door auto with the 2.4 also he got 15.77@89
then i had a Z24 5 speed and got 15.11@90mph
not bad at all. im sure a decent stall converter would wake the car up a lil bit

Having a '97 Z24 and running it for the first time at the track, got a 16.7.
From there, I added mods and the times came down with the mods along with better driving.
My best time for my auto Z24 is 15.631 but know that should be around 15.5 or 15.4.
The exhaust is and has been my setback for faster times but that's no excuse I guess.
All in all, the autos are about a half a second slower than their stick counterparts with the same mods.
As soon as I get another exhaust setup, I'll be hitting the track a couple more times to see what the ole girl can do.
With 196,000 miles on the engine, it's still as strong as ever with a recently broken 1/8 mile record of 9.8 over my best of 9.92 at the 1/8 mile track .

Thank you Dave and JBO!
I got a pair of 15.9's on a stock auto, and a TON of 16.0's.
quite possible...
16.4-17.0 I my honest opinion.
