i was wondering what is required to be "street car" legal ? im in michigan if that makes a diiference. i am just looking to get rid of unneeded weight.
Most street car classes require all plastics, 2 front seats, carpet wherever there might exposed sheet metal, headliner, etc.
So despite the fact my car is gutted, its street car legal. and it only weighs 2200lbs w/o me.... I dont have airbags, hvac, rear steel bumper rebar.
The Bottle Bomb is getting parted out:

I pulled all the carpet, insolation, and sound deadening material out of my Sunbird when I had it...
It made the car a bit louder inside, and I only lost maybe 20lbs if I was lucky.
Just strip the trunk out and no one will know.
lol, i have ALL my carpet pulled....my center console pulled....my rear seats pulled...my trunk material pulled...my spare pulled...my drivers side airbag pulled...(replaced with racing wheel)...sometimes, i even have my passenger seat pulled until someone needs a ride...i have my cruise control pulled, my rear seatbelts pulled, the airbag SDM unit pulled, my (non-working) front speakers pulled, and i also have various plastics pulled from other areas of the car pulled.
How much weight do yall think THAT is??

I thought removing safety equipment that came on the car, (ie airbags, seatbelts ect.) made it illegal to drive on the road?

if the seat is gone why would it matter if the seat belt/air bag was there or not? I have no interior except for 2 front seats, front seat belts, and the things needed to drive the car. No rear belts, no bags, no dash, no carpet, no headliner, and im sure I missed a bunch there.

If the seat is gone ok. But, im assuming you would still have a drivers seat after you removed the airbag in the drivers seat.
My steering wheel mounted air bag is disabled. There is no bag in the seat itself. Air bags are a joke, if you are wearing your belt they arnt exactly needed. When I totaled my 00 the bag did me no good at all. It actualy did damage to my glasses when the were hit by it (they left my face). The only part of my body that actualy touched the bag was where it hit my arms when it went off.
Some where my parents even have a letter from the state that allows the air bag in what ever vehicle she is driving to be disabled.

TO answer your actually question, need some info. Are you referring to laws to have the car on the street? Are you talking about for professional racing classes? Laws are different for every state, see your state laws. Rules for professional racing is different based off who it is held by etc..... You need to see there rules.

i know my reduction plans are gonna be fiberglass hood, trunk, doors, bumpers, and fenders, the inner dash skeleton is gettin remade out of aluminum (sp?), all HVAC craps being removed, spare tire wells being cut out and replaced with an aluminum sheet, all the trunk carpet, and all the sound deadner and insolation is being removed.
I have done some looking around and i have found some website that have full front carbon firber clip for the cavalier and i belive the doors to
whats the site?

imo i think its not a very smart idea to start hacking away and removing all the components of the car. they where put there for a reason. like the rear bumper support its there to take the hit from a rear end collision so the driver doesn't. also fiber glassing all body-panels like hood trunk fenders doors isn't very safe. also the airbag deal if they weren't necessary or didn't save lifes they wouldn't be there they would be optional. but i wouldn't start messing the body panels or cutting out the trunk floor as it will make the integrity
of the car very weak and completely crumble in a impact and to me that isn't worth shaving off a tenth or two of your time at the track. unless its a strictly track car i would never do that.
again these are my views and i know some of you may not agree but im throwing this out there for the people that may have not seen this point of view and will maybe think about it a little more before just hacking away
I'll try to do some looking again and i'll let you guys know
This should answer you question Shawn McKenzie
http://www.streetconcept.com this site will give you guys the carbon fiber doors and also give you fenders butt to me the whole door thing would be really nice butt really @!#$ expensive if you ask me!!!!!!!!!
The doors are at class glass for way less. I think they are 600 each.
Excercise and the spare tire to start. Just like driving always fix the driver first.

Weight reduction is by far one of the smartest things you can do with a car, right next to weight balance. These are things you can do that shouldn't have any effect on safety (Even if Js are regarded as death traps already, you should still have airbags and other safety gear):
CF fenders/hood (do they make CF fenders for a J?)
Pull back seat
Battery relocation
Lightweight rims (reducing rotational mass is even better than just mass)
Pull stereo equipment
Pull Trunk carpet
Lightweight pulleys (still reduces weight AND adds power, thats almost like some kind of bonus)
A/C delete
Racing seats
I'm sure there's more you can do. I even went to the point of removing the 1 lb total of extra plastic in the engine bay of my car (gotta pack around that heavy-ass V6). You can only be limited by your imagination. When Honda built the NSX, they replaced the leather shift boot with a carbon mesh one, all to shave off an additional 100 grams of weight (my boss did the same thing with his, 'cause his had a leather shift boot). This gives you an idea of just how far you can go. Technically, you could lose tons of weight by removing the engine. But your P:W Ratio may suffer a bit for that one...

I've allready pulled every interior panel out to shave some pounds. I just wish I could get a carbon trunk for my car.

also for example, in a snowmobile you can take out every bolt/fastener, drill out the center of each and lose 50 lbs without sacraficing strength in the bolts/fasteners. just think how many more there are in a car
then you can remove all the wire looming and all the electrical tape holding the wires together, and just use 1 ziptie every couple feet or so.
