hey guys, I'm thinking of buying a parts car and (don't flame me please) building a full tube chassis, and putting all of the components in er. I was thinking a CRX and then putting the engine and transaxle over the rear wheels. I would like that car because of how light it is so the suspension wouldn't be so far off and because if i eliminate a computer, its alot less I have to worry about. I was wondering if any tracks would allow a totally fabbed vehicle to race or if there are certain rules to follow when building it.
obviously I'm not going to jump on this right away as I need to do alot of research but if anybody can steer me in some direction, pointers, anything, i'd appreciate it.
okay, what about if i do a tubo'd eco in it? anyone now? maybe ill do it F1 style.
First of all, what type of racing are you talking about here? Drag racing? Road racing?
Once you determine that, find the rule book for the appropriate sanctioning body (ie. NHRA, SCCA, NASA,etc..) and it will answer all of your questions on what is legal and what is not.
FWIW, in the road racing world, the SCCA GT classes feature mostly tube frame cars with silouette fiberglass bodies...

wow this project is doomed before it even begins....
first off, good luck doing it F1 style unless you found a trans of that type with an eco bellhousing... vw fox's, passats, audi a4 fwd's have that kind of trans but nothing with an eco as far as i'm aware.
second, why are we talking about this in the racing forum and not the "other cars" forum if its about a CRX? eco or no eco, its not a J.
third, if you have to ask questions as vague and basic as what you are, you are about 2-5 years behind in the research you would need to do before you could even justifiably start buying parts for such a project.
In short, its not going to happen. More power to you if you can prove me wrong but I've got good money that says it'll never even get off the ground, much less get finished.

i'll agree with jay ....FOR RIGHT NOW.....
however i will say that it CAN be done.... point being, many chassis companies make READY MADE chassies for different classes....
you will need a welder, and someone who welds on chassies to get the geometry correct.
its not TOO hard of a job, however if you go into it unorganized it will be like having sex with a woman and hoping the baby comes out as a giant tungsten ball bearing...
as for tracks.... IF, and i do mean IF you pass safety inspection on an open run day, then sure.... as for classes, then you would have to get ahold of a rule book and build the car to a certain classes spec.
as for the bellhousing, check out what Opel does with their RWD cars, either that or get an adapter.

Hey, I didn't say it couldn't be done, but like I said, if you need it explained to you HOW to do it, its a LONG way off before you can do it.... unless you've got more resources than probably a good 50-100 members of this forum put together...
