try a racing school. while going in circles may not appeal to some. just imagine being on the track with 40 other cars gonig at speeds of 180 mph

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!

Ask around. For somthing like auto X, get some suspension mods, grippy tires, some engine mods, (roasting the tires every 5seconds ain't good) and making the car lighter is always better too.

Fore drivivg skills:
1) professional racing school
2) Living around hills/ mountains/ very curvy roads helps alot too.
My .02 cents.

If your are talking about doing it for a hobby look into auto cross with your local SCCA chapter or car club. A stock car works fine to start out with no need for mods to have fun.

If you are talking about becoming a pro well probably to late in life to become a pro. Most pro's of nascar for example start racing VERY young usually go karts and progress to dirt track and up and up...

You definately want to start out in something like SCCA's Solo 2 autocrossing. Maybe after that you could progress up to a touring circuit in SCCA or NASA.

Best thing to do is to leave your car stock and go autocross it like that for 8-10 events. Once you have done that then I would add a few things to it. You definately don't want to start lightening the car though since that would put you in a Street Mod class (which is very competitive and a cavalier wouldn't stand a chance).

Nope...cavvy's don't stand a chance in SM...I landed there when I went with the GM blower :p

Cavvy's don't hold too well in G-Stock either if there are Mini Cooper S's there. (Assuming the drivers know how to use them)

Still fun as hell though.

In our case, suspension mods will do much more for AutoX times than power mods. I have pretty nasty traction issues at our location, so I really, really would like to have an LSD.

If you look at my registry, the suspension setup I've got does really well for me. I run the konis full stiff rear and 1/2 stiff up front.

A cav can do ok in GS with the right prep. and i think a supercharged cav with a lsd in SM would be nice also. But no matter what car you have and what mods you have nothing is better than seat time!
To start i would just run it stock with a performance alignment. Make sure that your car is in good working order also. and i found that power steering fluid gets a beating in autox and can foam up and get stiff at the wrong time. valvoline synpower power steering fluid helps keep it smooth.
Autox is fun and you get to meet allot of great people.

see ya!

I think a cavalier would do pretty well in SM, I used to drive a Cavalier before I wrecked it, now I drive a Dodge Neon and it holds it's own VERY well in SM and I even play around with the SM2 boys, I don't see too many J-Bodies where I race in my class but I'm sure that you could start something.

If you're nervous about it, you can start out in Street Prepared or Stock classes and you would probably own a few, but prepared to get owned yourself. I started out and worked my way into SM, you have to walk before you crawl huh?

Anyway, just stick to it and you should be able to run any class you want . . ..well, besides kart or american iron, LOL!!!!
