Transmissions Question
Tuesday, July 20, 2010 8:30 PM

i am interested in swapping transmissions in my '97 sunfire gt and would like to know of any / all transmissions that are compatible with the 2.4L DOHC engine. im looking for direct bolt on, doesnt matter if its longitudinal or transverse, i would actually prefer to know about both. I have done some research but havent come up with any consistent answers. can a trans from a 2200 be swapped? if so does it matter if is long drive or trans drive? any help would be greatly appreciated. maybe expand on this and get a list going for the 2200 also, 'sticky' the list in the transmission forum?

i know it seems like a really simple question but i havent been able to find a solid answer

thanks for the help

Not all the trannys are the same. Some of the base model cavalier that had the 2200 AKA 2.2 OHV came with 3 speed trannies. Some did come with 4 speeds. If you have a gt you have a 4 speed. Best thing i would do is get one from a 2.4 ltr. This way you have no issues with bolt up and what not. I know (or at least heard) the bell housings are diffrent from the 2.4 and the 2.2 ecotec DOHC, so that may cause a problem, but im not 100% sure. Hope this helps!!

There are also slight differences year to year on the 4speed automatics. 96 was different than 97, and also 98 had some changes, etc. John Piparo (batman) might know some of these changes

OHV, DOHC, and ECO bellhousings are all different. and as such, will not mount from one engine to another. ALL transmission mounts are different (3, 4, and MT). HOWEVER, if you have a 2.3/2.4 auto, it SHOULD BE a 4 speed trans, which means any 4 speed trans 95-02 FROM A TWIN CAM will work. if you want to swap from an auto to manual, you will need ot cut and weld the mounts. if you have an isuzu (95-99) MANUAL transmission, and want to swap to a getrag (00-02) manual transmission (or vice-versa), you will have to cut the mounts and re-weld them.

Thank you for the replies, it is a great help, i am new to this so please forgive me if i ask what seems like an obvious question. Can the bell housings be swapped between two different transmissions? An extreme example, but could a 4L30 trans be used with the 2.4L (assuming the bell housing situation could be worked out)? Aside from the physical mounts between the trans and the vehicle are there other incompatibilities?

again thank you for the help, im just getting started in the custom auto world and would like to go into it knowing something
