I'm new!!
Thursday, July 23, 2009 8:11 AM
Well the only reason i think i have signed up on here is due to my boyfriend and all his W-body accounts and the fact that yes he knows alot about cars but since we drive different body styles somethings about my car he cant help me with!

I drive a 1999 Pontiac Sunfire, has 145****kms runs not to bad tho i have had it since about the end of March, there are couple of things i am not so sure if its a Sunfire thing or just mine lol

#1 I am not sure but when i go to start it most of the time it take a little while for it to start it always ends up starting but usually if it has been sitting for awhile its a little ruff.... and idea why or like i said just a Sunfire thing?

#2 The gas millage on this thing is horrible.. last tank of gas put in fuel injector.....doesnt seem like it has done anything i just filled up again today after only have filling up with the fuel injector on Monday... once i get to about a half a tank the gas gage bounces horribly now once again is that just a Sunfire thing or do i have dud for a car.... ???

Now i do know i did drive a 1996 Sunfire as well.. as far as i remember the gas millage on that one wasnt to bad, but i know the fuel injectors all pretty much went on that one and where fixed, am i expecting that to happen to this one as well or was that just cause that one was older? I never use the Ac ever so i know thats not the reasoning behind the gas millage i am stumped and so is my boyfriend could i just need a tune up and a oil change?

If anyone has any suggestions pls help??? i cant afford a new car anytime soon!!

The starting could be a number of things, weak battery, corroded cables, weak starter.

The bad mileage could be alot of things, dirty air filter, dirty fuel filter, shot plugs/wires, driving style, faulty sensor some place, etc.

The gas gauge bouncing is the sending unit going out.

Hope that helps.

Replace fuel filter.
Air Filter.
Spark Plugs and wires.
Check fuel pressure (too high would cause it to run rich to eat gas but I'd think you'd throw a code)
Maybe have a shop check and make sure the o2 sensor is cycling well. if it's too slow, it'll be slow to adjust to changes and end up using more fuel as a result.
Clogged cat. Unlikely but possible.
Check tire pressure. Can be a big factor as well.

That's all I can think of. Mind is hazy but if I think of more I'll let you know

thats a great help as well like i said i am just learning more about checking stuff and i know most cars are similar as to how they run ie different makes, so i will relay all the info to my boyfriend and hopefully we can figure out what is the problem if it werent for him i would even have known what to ask about!!

Well.... had to go out so i figured first things first check the tire pressure... well both tires on the passenger side 40 pounds each, next checked drivers side....front one had 25 pound back one had 30! So guess i will see if that makes any difference if not i guess its hit the other suggestions and go from there i am glad i have a man that isnt scared of fixing cars cause with the luck hes been having with his car its a good thing he can fix it on his own so he has to fix his oil leak this weekend then if my problem still is a problem next weekend its my car that he'll be fixing !

soo.. haven't been on here in awhile,

problem still with the gas gauge still bouncing up and down once it hits half a tank, but now my coolant light keeps coming on and off, its full i have checked several times not sure whats going on with that, we had a misshap with the oil change grabbed 10w30 instead of 5w30 and are going to change that this weekend

like i said before boyfriend doesn't know enough about j-bodies so if he has something to go by would help alot he thinks it might be a blown head gasket but isn't totally sure about that either any more ideas of what could be wrong with my car help!!!

Coolant sensor is going bad just unplug it till you can replace it.

Head gasket sounds likely. When you drain your oil check it. If it looks milky then you have coolant in your oil which means bad head gasket.

You gauge wont fix itself. Youll have to drop the take and replace the sender on the pump. Mine does the same thing.

Our tanks are 14ish gallons. So I doubt youre burning through gas but just see how much youre putting in it to fill it. I go through about a tank of gas every week in a half.

well the oil was changed about a 2 weeks ago i mean it was way over do but i dont remember it being milky looking just very dirty and as for going thru gas it think on a good week i go thru about a tank a week or so, so i am not sure what to think but i will let my boyfriend know the suggestions and see if we can figure it out, thanks

any other ideas would be good to!
