I've got a problem!!!
Tuesday, March 24, 2009 6:27 AM
I drive a 98 Z24 with the LD9. So, my problem is, I was driving home from school yesterday, was driving pretty easy, and I had to slow down for an animal in the road. Whenever I started to take off again, my car started making a funny noise. Whenever I got home, I told my dad and he said a rod is knocking. So, my question is, which would be my cheapiest route, to get my motor rebuilt, or to get a new LD9? Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Is he sure its a rod knocking? They dont normally just all of a sudden knock. Check out everything else that could make a similar noise first. If you really think its a rod bearing drop the pan and take a look.

The person who had the car before me drove the car rough and the check engine light has been on, but stupid me didn't think to get it checked out. I've had a couple engine problems lately and they have just seemed to get worse. My dad has worked on cars since he was in school, not saying he is right, please don't take me the wrong way... But thank you, I will take a look. Until then, I'm stuck in a 05 Honda Accord V6...

Austin, there are few inexpensive routes unless you have access to a cheap or free donor car with a good engine (and we'd all like to have a few of those). I've shopped for used LD9's and the ones within 300 miles of me vary widely in price from $500 to over $1000 and "low milage" ones have near 100k miles them. There's always an exception if you're lucky enough to fine one. I doubt you'll find a new LD9 anywhere (but I have seen a couple of crate engines show up on eBay). Rebuilt engines are available, even online, but aren't cheap. And, the LD9 is not an engine I'd have rebuilt by someone that hasn't done some (preferably lots!) of them before. In the end, you'll have to decide if it's worth fixing up the car or trying to find another in better shape. (You mentioned it had been beaten by the previous owner.) If you want to search online for used engines, www.car-part..com is a good nationwide search tool. Good luck.
