Hey J-Body. I am back. I used to have a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier back in the day and most of the guys on here called me a ricer, because my car was pretty riced out. I had the aluminum spoiler, decal stickers, and everything. Now I am back and all grown up. I currently have a 2000 Dodge Dakota Sport Truck which I am going to sell to buy a 1996 Cavalier. I will have about 2 grand left over to start modding. I want to know how I can get started modding it, without ricing it out or ruining the car. I tried to paint the interior of my last cavalier and it did not turn out so well. To get started I would like to get a body kit for it, preferbly the Bomex. How much would the body kit cost to buy/install/paint it black? I also wanted to get a white shift knob like I used to have. I also want to get the K&N Air Intake like I had because it worked very well and I could wash it. I would like to get an audio system as well, just something average, not too cheap, not too expensive. All of this cost under $2000.00 do you think? Please let me know what my options are , or if you have any suggestions. Thanks very much. I don't know if you guys remember me or not but my name is Justin and I live in PA. I do remember I had a couple friends on here, but I forget.
no matter what you do, anytime you do something that someone doesnt like your going to get called a ricer. this is the age of stock body kits, so if you put a body kit on people will call you a ricer. if you do things for your own enjoyment instead of doing them to make the car better some people will call you a ricer. first thing to do is get over that term and decide what you want to do and build the car for yourself and not for anyone else. if people call you a ricer so what. let them know that unless they are funding your car they can go take a flying leap.
now the first thing i would do is just spend a few days and read thru old posts. most things have been done or tried and you can read about them and check out the pics. find out what really intrests you the most and go for it. only thing i will offer is to take your time on any mod you do and do it right the first time, buying cheap parts and trying to save money by doing a half ass job wont give you a good looking car. it will just make you cannon fodder for the internet goons to rip u a new a-hole. take your time, plan out your car, plan out your part,s buy quality parts, take your time installing them or have a professional that knows what he's doing install them.

Buying, painting, and installing the kit will probably take pretty close to that amount, depending on the amount of work is needed for fitment, and all that good stuff. Car audio could also take the full 2Gs.
Start in one place, and slowly make the progress. Exterior, ICE, then performance, or something like that.

Agree with the sentiments, disagree with the order. It should be performance, exterior then ICE...

Yes, noob, the search button is for you...
exterior/performance is a close tie. here is my deal. i am going to get 3500.00 for my truck. i have a cavalier picked out for 1800.00. i wanted to get a body kit and have a body shop install/paint it for me. that will leave me with about 300 dollars left. (have to pay for registration/tags and all that crap for new car. with that 300, i wanted to get a aftermarket exhaust (because the one on the cavalier is pretty bad). and then after that, i will just save up to do interior work like audio/shift knobs, floor mats, etc. the hood and trunk lid are peeling pretty bad, so do you guys think i could touch that up somehow by buffing it out with wax or something? let me know. thanks
is the hood and trunk rusting because if so you'll have to get it repainted. Most likely though if its peeling badly you'll have to get them both painted again anyways. Dude check on here for a body kit they are always selling on here in fact If I remember right I think someone is selling a bomex kit I cant remember what years its for but yeah. Do the fitment yourself it will be alot cheaper. plus its fiberglass so if you get it wrong reglass it then try again its not that hard. Unless if you suck with fiberglass then dont try it.
yea i would would fit the body kit on it sand it and primer it and have the paint shop paint it to match your car...more work you do is less money out your pocket

no you should just fit it to the car then have the body shop sand, prep and paint.
not alot of shops will touch and warranty someone elses prep work. not to mention they may want to do it again to make sure it was done right so either way your paying for it.
btw a cavalier with a body kit on stock wheels and suspension with an exhaust is going to look very silly.
yeah listen to AWD on that trust me I have a body kit, air ride, its half way primered (only thing left is my roof and trunk) and it looks very silly but sometimes you have to just deal with it and just save up your money till you get it done.
Remember no matter what anybody says about your car, it doesnt matter. They're not seeing the aftermath of it in your eyes. You gotta always start somewhere.
well, this all depends on what you want. looks? -or- performance? i prefer performance myself. the way the body looks from the factory is just fine, in my opinion. i would start with rims and exhaust, air intake, then the audio. as for audio, alpine is the best sound for the money. hope this helps a bit
Did I mention I drive a 2000 Lumina now?-----wigm-tuners.org member
pick up a 96-99 z24 kit, put a cat back exhaust on it, lower it , and some nice rims, it's a work in progress you can't do the full thing with just 2g's take your time make tasteful decisions learn from your last one, i might suggest checking out your local pick and pull you can find some nice steals in there. check on craigslist. keep at it pick and pick at it eventually you'll end up with something like sndsgood's car keep pluggin at it.
