bottom end involvment?
Thursday, August 23, 2007 9:39 PM
so i'd like to replace my rings and while im at it maybe install some forged pistons/rods.

ive only ever done top end wokr on small blocks yet alone a four banger.

so basicly im asking this: to replace rings, do i need to lift out the engine, tranny, anything like that. is removing the head much difficulty? and most importantly. are there ANY problem bolts that are hard to get to. cuz thats always what slows you down.

thanx to any1 bored enough to answer my dumb@$$ question.

You don't NEED to remove the engine to pull and replace pistons, however... you will need to drop the crank and pull the head off. At that point it would be easier to do it on a stand. I would HIGHLY suggest getting the cylinders bored out a little bit, like .010 to make the surfaces all new and keep your new pistons and rings from wearing prematurely. You will also need to put new rod bearings in, and main's.

(i dont have much in the way of a place to work on other than my gf's mom's garage)
