Hi guys. Not very good with English but will try to explain:
I am new here and new to American cars also, cause living in Europe and been driving British and Swedish cars before.
Bought a Sunfire sedan for my dad but noticed it to be too cool for him, so decided to keep it for my self as a second car and now considering to make it as every day ride.
It is ' 95 with 2.2L engine, 5-speed manual on it. In driving condition but a lot of work to do. Brakes should be replaced, needs new paint...... Well, it has some strange problem appearing with engine. Run out all fuel some time ago and get noticed that a fuel meter (gauge) didn't show correct level of it in a tank. And then the problems started - car didn't start when turning the key, it had clicking noise as the battery is drain, but it wasn't. The car stalled when driving and I got new alternator to be placed on it. Ordered brand new from Germany for a cheap price

. Well, after that it starts great BUT...it stalls when I am driving it. And I don't know why! And my new alternator comes very very hot. I am afraid that it can burn some day. Is it normal for Sunfires to have alternator to be so damn hot?
Well, lets get back to engine stalling...
Look, how this appears - engine starts great, with a key. RPMs are about 1.2k when in neutral. But when I turn Air Conditioner on, RPMs are jumping up and down and I have feeling engine could stall, but it hardly keeps working. When AC switched off, it returns to constant and normal again. What could cause this?
The second and the worst is that engine stalls when driving. By hitting the accelerator it torques immediately, keeps going while on in gear, but when I press a clutch to shift gears or press brakes to stop a car it stalls and all panel lights comes on. So I should release the clutch to jump start engine while the car moves.
Can anyone tell, please, why is this happening? Why the engine works when started, but stalls when driven? What a lemon!
Many thanks in advance!
Best regards.
Welcome to the board Aivars, i'm not sure if these cars come with one, but one of my other GM vehicles did this and it turned out to be the Idle Air Control Valve, also your fuel gauge problem sounds like the good old GM fuel level sensor in the tank. Hope this helps, if not, i'm sure someone on this site will have the answer, there are some awesome people here,
Thanks for any advice concerning my probs.
The stalling problem sounds like a mass airflow sensor malfunction to me, I think it's in the throttle body. I'm not sure about the air condidtioning. The alternator on my car can get very hot and I havent had any probllems, if it is hot enough that it actually burns your hand, there is something wrong. The fuel gauge is probably the fuel level sending unit in the gas tank, it is part of the fuel pump. I have tried to make my words simple. I hope I am helpfull.
Make sure you have the right alternator and it's in there properly. If you don't have the right alternator (or a defective one) the serpentine belt won't be moving properly which could both cause the alternator to heat up excessively AND it could also cause problems when you turn the AC on because of the extra load from the AC Compressor. I know that i had some problems when i had to replace my alternator a while back first there was the problem of getting the right one since there are different ones for the different motors and then i ended up with a defect.
Just a thought, hopefully i'm not too far off base here. lol. This is my first attempt at a "tech" post, and there are things i'm still learning.
Thank you for a help, guys
I'M NOT A MECHANIC but you said you ran it out of gas before, could u have sucked stuff into ur fuel filter?
4 door civic on the way

i need a daily driver
That might happen. New fuel filter is purchased just need time to put it on.

Thanks
