I have a 97 2.4 cav
I just found out that my cyl. head has a crack above the second cyl, aswell as a hole in the valve on the 4th cyl. I need to get a reman head. Iv been calling around and the best price i can find is 249.99 canadian. If someone knows where i can get one for a better price, or has one they want to sell can you please let me know !!
Another thing i need to know, is how hard it is going to be to change the head, calling around to my local shops, it sounds like a brutal job to do !! Can someone who has done the job let me know if its worth paying 600 + dollars to get someone to do the job, or should i just do it myself and save the money.
Let me know what you guys think !!
That sounds like a good price to me on a remanufactured head. The machine shop i do business with sells most heads for $325.00. I've never pulled a ld9 head but the heads I've pulled have been fairly easy. Just label or bag what you take off and get a service manual if you don't already have one. It helps if you have another car to drive so you can take your time and make sure the job is right.
I hear the hardest part is putting the cams back on because you have to make sure the timing is on point.
Maybe others can give more insight...

If you know about nothing about mechanic, you're up for a challenge. If you have some experience, you'll be able to do it with a manual.
The hardest part is not timming the engine. That's about the easiest part. You line up both cam gear (there's a hole to put an M8 bolt in it and you have to line it to the hole in the housing) and you put both dot in line(one on the crank and one just over the crank).
That hardest part is usually to put the timming cover in place because you have about 1 inch to put your hand in and put back the bolts and nuts.
You gotta be carefull when you take off the head so that no coolant get in the oil and no oil sit in the cylinder when you put the head back.

Iv had lots of experience with doing the heads on cars Iv had a probe GT soo I know what its like to deal with minimal space for the cover !!!
I bought a head right from the gm dealership in NH, I ended up getting it for $100.00
Id say it was a pretty good deal !!
How do the bottom ends hold up in cavs ? are they known to go at 125k miles
or should i be fine ??
Well Jon C : How long have you been driving youre car or has it been since youre cyl head has been wornout for?. Usually if youre car has been driven on a blown cyl head it puts alot of stress on the bottom end of the engine, Usually stress on the bearings. Ive seen my friends 96 sunfire with 305,000 kms on it orginal engine still running great, Shakes a little bit, But the engine runs pretty strong. He had to do the cyl head around 200,000 kms. everything else runs great.
ya my engine is at 220 kilometers i can still drive the car but it misfires pretty bad at idol
soo i decided to do the job now before something else happens.
my compression accross the cylinders is 215 215 215 90
soo it seems like everything else is good no knocks still runs nice and smooth
and pulls hard. When i get out of second gear i dont even notice the misfire !
Im sure the new head will make a huge difference !!
