I had heard from some people on another site that it's a bad idea to put exhaust piping 2.5 inches and over on a smaller engine and I just wanted to verify weather this is true or not. I understand that you may not be able to give me a finite answer due to opinion differences of a good exhaust, but I'm just curious if there's anything wrong with putting that size pipe on my engine? My '96 Cavi has a 2.2l ohv, and i'm looking to do a full exhaust. Would 2 1/2" piping be too large for my engine?
I would go with 2.25 instead of 2.5 on your car unless you plan on boosting in the future. 2.5 is just too big for your motor N/A.
what about a 4" "coffee can" muffler
Thanks for the help. I was thinking 2.25 would probably be the better way to go, but I knew where I could get a 2.5" exhaust for cheap so I thought i'd ask. And i'm thinking no on the 4" coffe can.
not related to the topic, but are you the Dan Carpenter I went to high school with in KY?

Well it all depends on the size of the motor as well.
Our motors are actually decently sized compared to some imports who don't even break the 2.0 mark in displacement. The biggest issue is exhaust velocity...which means that there is a such thing of "too big" of an exhaust. On most 4 cylinder motors, 2 1/4" is a well matched size but 2 1/2" on our cars won't kill you or anything, you'll just lose some low end power campared to a smaller sized exhaust because it takes longer to build up exhaust velocity.
Hope that made sense...
