Hi guys,
I'm new to this forum and so far it seems pretty cool
Well the reason i'm here is cause my dad bought a '97 pontiac sunfire. Its a 2.2 auto, and seems to Lack a lot power. I was just wondering if there is at all any way to get fault codes out of these things without taking it to a mechanic shop?
My dad has already taken it to various mechanics that charge $40 a scan. And so far they havent even given a straight answer as to what it maybe.... just a "leave us $500 and the car so that we can get started on it." It doesnt need much since the car runs without the "check engine " light. It did pass smog inspection,. It got a new catalytic converter, Tps sensor, and refurbished injectors. Thus far, it runs the same....with a slight stumble at idle, and not much power throughout the powerband. It does however travel fine around the city and highway (80+mph) but we're trying to fix this thing to make it run right.
I think my dad had the fault codes on a sheet the mechanics gave them. and i'll list them shortly after he gets home. Other than that slight hesitation and low power, it is a really great car.
I thank you guys in advance and hope to hear from you soon
If your care has no check engine light and it passes inspection, there is no codes to find. Those guys are just trying to take money out of your pocket.
Trust me, there is nothing wrong with your car...your car is slow. The 2.2 OHV 4-speeds run high 16s to low 17s (1/4 mile) stock and the 3-speeds can run anywhere from 18s to 19s...yes...very sad.
If you don't know if you have a 4-speed or 3 speed follow this:
4-speed shifters say: P R N D 3 2 1
3-speed shifters say: P R N D 2 1

Shifted: The 97 with the 2.2L was 120hp. I know not much better, but every little bit of hp helps.
Eric, Your car passed inspection. I agree with what NHJK stated. I would just check out the vacuum lines. A slight crack could cause your stumble. Other than that your car is ok. If you want to feel more power, you will need to start modding it.

Have you checked your spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, fuel pressure & fuel pressure regulator? Just a few simple things that could affect performance. Good luck.
