ok my cavalier has 15 inch tires on it and i was wondering what it would take to put 17 inch rims/tires on it. cause im looking at getting these:

Funny you posted this becasue I am gonna but a new set of 17X7's on my 03 cav and am thinking about useing the same tires also. I am gonna be suing a 215/45/17 tire. I used wild weasels wheel calculator and they are only off by about .4 of mile per hour. So I thkn that you would be OK. Make sure to get hub rings if needed.

We have plenty of wheel space on our cars. The issue isn't the rim size but the tire size. Even when you're talking about 17 inch rims, that's not even close to what you can fit on our cars. You can actually fit 20 inch rims on our cars without any issues but of course, the tire would be really skinny.
From personal experience, the 215/45R17s are perfect...any smaller and you will throw off your speedometer and there will be less protection for the actual rim.

By the way, I know Kumhos are cheap...try and stay away from them. Look into a better brand like BFGoodrich, Nitto or Toyo...something of that nature. Also had a bad experience with the Kumho Ecstas, they ended up bubbling on every tire.

Ive only got 16s but all the Tires Ive gotten From Hankook have always been good quality to and they are at a good price.
Killa I'm gonna have to dis agree with you on the Kuhmos. I have the 711 on my car now and they're great. I had the 712 on my Firebird for years with no problems at all.
They are indeed inexpensive but i wouldn't say cheep. True BFg's are very good but they have had troubles before too. I won't even mention Firestones!
Just make sure you run the proper tire presure and you'll be fine. If I didn't have a tire failure with the Kuhmos at speeds above 160 in a 3800 pound car then you should be just fine in a 2600 car that can't exceed 108. That and its what I'm curently running with no issues.
Usualy those bubbles come from damageing the tires like hitting a pot hole or speed bump too fast / hard. Curbs are a no no also.

I meant money wise...as far as bad experience, you can take that however you want. Also it depends what tire you get. He wants Ecstas which is what is what I had.

Thats what I had too. the Ecsta 712 for my Firebird and now the Ecsta 711 on my Cav.

I have Kuhmos on my grand am, and ill only put good year on my cars from now on. I was poor, so they worked great for the first 5k miles.
so i guess if i get the package i posted above everything will work out.
killa: im only getting those tires cause there cheap. i figure id save money and get some bettter tires. but theyll last for awhile. (cant be any worse than the cheap bf goodrich i have on my car right now). plus i need to get another set of tires for my 15 inch rims (winter rims)
any clue on what a good tire would be to use for winter driving?
Oh these things are deffinently NOT snow friendly! I'd recomend keeping your old wheels and tires for winter driveing. If you do then you can get dedicated snow tires
I don't know why you guys have had issues with Kuhmos and I haven't. I'm sorry you had problems with them but they're fine for me.
As for Good Years? Thats all they will give you is ONE good year ! I've tried them before and they were too fast for my likeing. If you can aford them try the BFG's they were longer then Good Years and IMO are a MUCH better tire.

first rule of rims. if it snows in your area, take them off for the winter. salt will eat the finish on rims. 17x7 w/ a 35mm offset is fine. the 215/45/17 tire is fine or if you want a tad wider tire the 225/45/17 is fine too. please lower your car if you get rims or else it will look like a 4x4

i do plan on lowering it before i get the rims. im going to be going with the eibach prokit. cause i dont want to rip up a body kit.

Might I suggest a Falken tire. I speak from personal experience.
Also I went with a 225-45 17 and have no speedometer issues at all.
