First off, Hello everyone, first post on j-body. Wasn't sure where to post my question, So I thought, self if you were a newb where would you post, and I said well I am a newb so here we are. Now on to the question.
To first set things up, the only engine mods the I have so far is a WAI and a racing muffler, still have the rest of the stock exhaust. I have notice that since installing these, obviously I have gained some horsepower over the stock parts. Yet the thing that I have noticed it the major drop in rpm's. Where as before the governor kicked in at 95 mph, it now doesn't kick on till 105mph. That being said I assume that the governor is RPM based and not really speed based.(forgive my knowledge about computerized cars as this is the first I have owned) The question I have is does anyone else have the problem of 5th gear being basically useless if you are running slower that 80mph, as the RPM only runs about 1500 or so running 75mph. Therefore if i run slower that 70mph I basically have to run in 4th as the car will basically just lug. Don't know much about manual trannies as i have always ran either Chevy 350's, 400's or PG's.

The racing muffler doesnt create horsepower, and doesnt free any up either.
Your intake may have given you 4-5 Hp conseratively speaking.
You are govern at 4000 rpm @ park and N. And you are governed at 108 mph, no higher or lower.
The racing muffler can increase or decrease horsepower and torque, based on whether the decrease in back pressure over the stock muffler is of benefit or hurting the motors performance when it exhales, and depending on the vehicle it can either be at low or high rpm, based on the characteristics of the motor. And I beg to differ with the govern thing, for the simple fact that when i purchased the car bone stock it would cut off at 95 mph, and after the intake and muffler were installed it now cuts off at 105 mph. But my actual question was if anyone had ever had the problems with not being able to run at highway speed in 5th gear without the car lugging down.

I usually push my slef into 5th any time I am over 80KM/h and yes there is no power while in 5th so if you want to pass someone or speed up then downshift.
the 5th gear is not meant to have power. just push it to 5th when you have got to the speed you want to maintain and it will lower your RPM and therefore your gas consumption.

Thanks Boorad, just wanted to make sure there was not problem with my car. First 4 cylinder I have owned, or manual tranny. V8's don't seem to have that problem. lol

hmmm weird, oh well i am just happy that it still runs at this point.

The racing muffler didn't do aything but change the way your exhaust sounds. The stock muffler is more than enough to handle the back pressure from ur car. When you get into forced induction, then a muffler and bigger pipes will help.
Welcome and I hope you hitting 108 on the track and not the street.
Peace Out!
