What does this do? lol The only thing I know about it is it helps boost your subs? Its a 1.5 Farad Capacitor with voltage gauge for $49.95. I figured I put this here and not in the audio and electronics forums.

how powerful are the sub/amp combination you're going to use?

Its a bandaid for your electrical system, but puts more of a strain on your alt.

and helps reduce the dimming of your headlights when your stuff goes "boomp de boomp"

honestly, i doubt you'll need it. the ex didn't really need the one she had in her car - she had a dimming problem with it installed, and when she removed it her dimming problem went away.

Learn something about electrical theory before you give out any more stupid advice.

Well I decided not to get it I dont want to spend the money plus there is no need to keep putting money in my car when it will prolly be gone in a year or less. So I can take the money I would spend on it and put it towards the new car!

I suggest that before you make such stupid comments you do a search. THIS HAS BEEN DISCUSED OVER AND OVER.

Is that where you got your knowlege? Let me fix your post for you.

I've been involved in these discussions, so I don't need to search. Only people with little knowlege of electricity think they can make sweeping comments that generalize the use of capacitors into either a usefull or worthless category.

If you understood what capacitors are and what they do then you would understand that they can be useful in certain situations. The problem is when people who don't know this try to apply them in situations where they aren't.

Here's my post from an earlier thread that answers the original posters question.

Labotomi wrote:A capacitor is a device that stores electrical charges on metallic plates separated by an insulating material. The purpose of a capacitor is to oppose a change in voltage. If the voltage dips, the capacitor discharges to try and maintain the voltage constant, also when the voltage comes back up, it tries to keep it at a lower level but then your alternator should have reserve capacity to overcome the opposition.

When your cars alternator is at it's limit in current output the voltage starts to decrease. This combined with the voltage loss along the power cables to the amplifier causes a power loss at the amplifier during heavy demand.

Think of it as a surge volume like a air tank attatched to a compressor. The air tank makes up for the limited volume output of the compressor by discharging when air pressure drops.

If your system is having voltage drops because of short bass hits then a cap can be a benefit. If it is seeing constant dropping of voltage because your alternator is too small to supply the constant current to your system then a cap will not help you at all and you should look at upgrading your electrical distribution system.

o man look what i started lol. That does answer my question so thank you very much. To me it sounds like I don't need to get one due to I don't compete or anything like that and plus I don't need to spend the money lol Thank you again!

i personally decided to get one for my stereo cause when i first installed my system i had major dimmage of my headlights. got so bad certain songs the lights almost looked like they shut off . so i got a 3 farad cap and it helped a good portion for the lights but they still dim slightly so next i will need to upgrade the alt. and battery

all this talk of 3 farad caps makes me think of college right now where were going over capacitors.....things like 2 picofarad capacitors, and a 1 microfarad cap being big, a 3 farad has to be the size of a coffe can isn't it?

I don't have any problems with dimming so that is also another reason I don't need it.
