simple answer. it wasn't ever made by toyota. just badged as them for overseas markets. GM had a deal with Toyota. kinda like Chrysler did with Mitsubishi.

I have a chevy cavalier gauge pod on my toyota cavalier. A real hassle to read as it is on the left hand window pillar and I have to drive with my head cocked to the left and my right eye twisted to the right to see the road :-)
