lookin for a new J any suggestions?
Wednesday, September 28, 2005 1:27 AM
Thats right, I'm looking to buy another Cavallier. But, I have a couple of questions first (please reply with honest, personal prefrence answers).....
What was the last year that they used the 2.4 LD9 motor in the cavaliers? Was it the 02' model before they changed to the new body style?
In personal pref. what motor is the easiest to get the most out of? (what motor can produce the most horsepower the easiest) the 2.4 or the Ecotec 2.2?
In personal pref. Should I get a 2000 to 2002 with the 2.4 or a 2003 to 2005 with the Ecotec 2.2???
Any sugestions or coments will be greatly appriciated. I like both body styles, and I am comfortable enough with the Jbody aftermaket scene to know where to get what is needed for either style. But, if you had the choice..... what would you choose, and why?

if i had to choose between an eco and a non-eco, i'd go with the eco.

if i had a choice of any, it would be a 3.L Z24, with my second choice being a SUPERDUPERrare first gen Z24 vert. i saw one once...it was hot. everything was in incredibly good shape, too.

Well, my personal preference would be the 2003-2005 Eco over the 2000-2002 2.4

2002 was the last year of the LD9

the LD9 already has a lot of performance parts out, but the ECO will have/is starting to have a lot more performance available. it will be a lot better engine to mod in say...a year or so.

i strongly dislike the newer cav body styles (which is why i opted for my 2002 z24 before the face lift). the 2002 LS Sport is the same as a 2002 z24, but with the ECO motor. thats what i'd go with if i was intending to mod for speed/performance/power/availability.

GO PATS!!!

O.K. Keep the coments coming.... Lets say body style is not an option. What motor would you prefer to have? The eco or the 2.4? Why one and not the other? Pros and Cons of both motors in your own opionion????

Well I cant tell you for sure, because I read this somewhere. I think it was Chevy performance mag with the Evil Z, but it had an eco. Any ways I think they said that the eco bottom end can take 500 horses and the block can take 1000. I hadnt heard anything like that about the twin cam.

Every 03-05 has the Eco along with suspension and rear brake improvements.

So if you want the latest engine design (apart from the 2.4 Eco) it is very easy to find cheap.

2.4 Eco??? Is that a missprint? What car are they putting that in? I already have a twin cam 2.4 in my 97Z . So, I am thinking 03 - 05 2.2 Eco might be my next step. I am keeping my 97Z so I will have a 2.4 and a 2.2!! Please keep your comments coming or pro and cons that you have heard or have had first hand expirience with the two dof. motors. I am Eco stupid so I am looking for any info on it that you are willing to distribute. As far as the 2.4... I am comfortable with the motor, being that I have had one for about 4 years know. But I am still uncertain about how it compares to the Eco as far as reliability, overall performance, and abilitiy to be built and hold up to the stress. Please keep your opinions on the 2 dif. motors coming!!!!

Ok...I'll just update you a bit.

GM introduced the "ECOTEC" motor in 2002 as an option for the j-body platform (Cavaliers & Sunfires). They were the 2.2 litre ECOTEC motors which made 140 HP. In 2003, they made changes to the fuel rail.

In 2005, GM introduced the Cobalt with 3 models, the 4 door version which had the 2.2 ECOTEC (same as the sunfires & cavaliers), The Base Model with the 2.2 ECOTEC & the SS Supercharged model that had a 2.0 ECOTEC which is basically a destroked 2.2 ECOTEC. The 2.0 ECOTEC motor came with a Supercharger and 9:1 Compression Pistons for 205 HP.

Also, GM did the same thing with the Saturn ION, Base Model had the 2.2 ECOTEC, ION Redline had the 2.0 Supercharged ECOTEC.

For the new 2006 Cobalts, GM finally released the SS Model (non supercharged) with the 2.4 ECOTEC motor. This motor includes Variable Valve Timing and 10.5:1 Compression Pistons for 170 HP.

You can also find an ECOTEC motor in just about every GM vehicle supplied with a 4 cylinder from 2003 and up.

By the way, all HP numbers are all Crank HP numbers.

Hope this has helped you out.

As far as the 2 motors on a street tuner level, they are both reliable. I'm not going to start a "This motor is better than that motor" discussion but they are both just about equal on a street tuner level.

Now, on a Pro Drag level, the ECOTEC has out done the 2.4 TC motor. Currently, there are ECOTEC motored drag cars that are leading just about every division in the Pro FWD and 4 cylinder division with power amounts of upwards to 1200 HP. Those are extreme amounts of power and of course extreme money to go torwards those numbers.

I think you are good eitherway.
