Interference Engine?
Sunday, September 25, 2005 7:38 AM
Hello All, I did a search on this and didn't find what I was looking for. Basically I want to know if the base 2.2 liter engine is interference or not.

I am looking to buy a daily driver and want something that I will only have to perform basic maintenance. Also is there a difference in reliability between the 95-97 engine and the 98+ engine?

What sort of things do I have to look out for on a higher mileage cavalier (100000+Km)?

What is a reasonable price for a base 2000 auto cavalier?

Thanks.

Interference what??

95-02 2.2L is the 2200, which is 115HP, and an old design really.
02+ 2.2L is the 2.2 EcoTec, which is 140HP, and a newer design partly based on the 2.3/2.4 (150HP), which is an excelent engine too.
Note: there is a year of overlap there, so be cafeful of which you are getting.

High milage 2.3/2.4 are natorious for head gaskets, but aren't much problem for a competitant mechanic to change.

Reasonable price for a 2000 Base Cav in excelent condidtion: $6000
Price varys greatly by condition, which is basically true of all cars.

well the engine reliablitiy question....i know the 1995 engine (Quad 4) isnt a reliable engine. and the price for a base 2000 auto is probably around 3800-4500. im saying this because my 1999 Z24 cavalier with power everything only cost me around 4500, so im thinking one year newer but base should be about there. i just looked at KBB and they are saying around 5,500. so idk....it depends if you are buying it from a private owner or dealership i guess.....if you have one in mind go here and type the info in and you'll see what its worth.....http://www.kbb.com/kb/ki.dll/kw.kc.li?kbb.OH;;OH099;;&44672;+r&721&2000;Chevrolet;Cavalier%20Coupe%202D

Brian, Thanks for the info. 3500-4500 USD sounds right from what I'm seeing. I'm basically looking for a good daily driver, but don't want to pay the price of a Jap car of equivalent year and mileage. What kind of fuel mileage are you getting?

I guess there are more interference issues in a cavalier engine than normal. Usually when people ask if an engine is an interference or not means "will the valves hit the piston if the timing belt breaks?" So that is what I was asking. I see this is the case with the ECOTEC engine, but what about the base?

Yep the 2200 is supposed to be an interference engine. It the chain stretches you should be ok. If it breaks you will have problems.

95-97 is the 2.2l. 98-02 is the 2200. 2.2l had 115 hp and 135 torque. the 2200 had 120 hp and 130 torque.

the 2.3 and 2.4 and the year that the 2.4l and 2.2l Eco (2002) came out won't be a factor for him, since he's looking for a base model. to get those engines he'd have to get the Z24/LS Sport.

Read Above.

ANYWAYS....

i have a 1999 Cavalier with the 2200. i paid $4000 USD for it last year with 114k miles on it. i'm getting 28-32 MPG with it too. thats mainly going 70-80 MPH. i'm up to 140k miles on it now. only major problem i had was the head gasket went this last spring. other than that, only some other minor problems. remember if you get a 2000 it is 5 years old and depending on how the previous owner(s) treated it it could run like a dream or be a nightmare.

BoltZ: On the engines, you're right. I just lumped them together for convenience.
Base models could have a 2.4 if it was custom ordered.
Price is going to depend alot on who you're getting it from, what options it has, and what condition it is in.

If you have a chain break you've got problems. I've never seen a chain break on a J-Body that wasn't modified. Almost all GM engines share this "problem".

Brian: I have a 95 2.3L. I love it, but I know my way around the engine bay fairly well. 2.3s are known to go through head gaskets every 80Kmi or so. The 2.4 isn't so different; more like every 120Kmi, depends alot on how you drive it.

i dont think theres a requirement for gas on our cars. if you do end up getting a 2.4 somehow im getting around 23 MPG i think the paper says. from when i filled up to my little over a half tank i have went 110 miles....and thats through town....starting and stoping.

87 is recommended. should say it right in your owners manual.

2.4's are known for throwing bearings. also at high mileage the water pumps tend to go and on a 2.4, its a bitch to change

Hey Boltz, the 2200 is slower than the 95-97 2.2L

Actually the 95 - 97 2.2L has 120hp and the 98 - 02 has the 115 hp. I know the 95 - 97 has the 120hp because I owned a 1995 and it was rated at 120. My daughter now ownes a 1998 2200 and only has 115hp. She was a bit ticked that my 95 had 5 more hp than her car. Not much of a big deal, but to her it was.
As far as gas ratings are concerned, the owners manual does state 87 octane minimum.
As for reliability, I never had any problems with the 95 when I owned it. I had it for 6 years. My daughter's 98 has had quite a few problems. She does drive it hard, meaning a lot of driving and has over 100,000 miles on it.

Just so you know the 98-2002 2200 had 115 HP and 135 Ft Lbs of TQ.

Hey guys, hate to revive an old thread, but did we determine that the 2.4L motor IS an interference motor? My brother-in-law's 97 GA might have a broken chain (haven't dug in to look yet) Just happened last night, he was starting to accelerate and the engine made some weird sounds, then quit. I did a WP on it a while ago (PITA) so I know how to get in there, and it's been sounding weird for a few months, almost like the timing chain tensioner was going.....Just want to know if I should plan on some new valves. I'll do a compression check when I'm done with the TC.

Thanks,
Brian
