Hi!. I'm new to the boards. I currently have a Sunfire GT 97 Auto and I was wondering what type of upgrades would I need to beat a Mustang GT V8 (If it's possible). Sorry for the stupid question...
BOOST
if it ain't broke...MAKE IT GO FASTER
it would help if you had a Rousch stage 2 mustang
Come on guys...
If you want an honest answer, you need some type of forced induction (turbo or supercharger) and work your transmission somewhat. Also, there is much more to it than "do this, do that". I suggest reading more in the performance forum on what parts do, how your motor works and go into the boost forum to find out how boost effects your motor and what parts it effects inside your motor and also how to maintaine it.
This is not cheap and not easy to do...takes alot of money, man-power & research to reach this goal.
Remember, if you can't find something, just ask.

Damn skippy
I'm mainly nice to them because I remember what it was like to be new here and not know ANYTHING about cars and motors and how they worked.

NJHK is a welcoming person makes you feel at home when ur a n00b like me and i think in order to beat a v8 stang maybe build and boooooost and tranny than you should be fine....
i am a newb here myself, but c'mon. a sunfire should not even try to line up against a V8 anything! oh ok i take that back, you should race a hummer. stock for stock that should be fun.
being that i used to race all the time i would say dont even think about the V8s. i dont know what the fastest j body runs, but i do know a stock older 4.6 V8 mustangs can do low to mid 14s in san antonio without any problem. a stock V6 mustang will do mid 15s and slower. you have to remember that a stock V8 has what?? 285 hp. what do we have? and for gods sake, stay away from camaros.
nothing is impossible but you have to be realistic. i used to race a V6 camaro and having it ported/polished/cammed/stalled i could only get it to 14.4. not untill my V8 swap was it really worth racing when it finally hit 12.7.
red 99 coupe.... no rust and it runs.
^^^you know nothing lol. any stage 2 turboed z24 or ecotec can beat up on stock mustang v8's pretty easily
15.891 @ 88 mph stock, still getting @!#$ty launches...

Dante is very correct.
People fail to realize that cylinders doesn't matter anymore. 4 cylinders if built properly or boosted properly can match up or destroy any v8. Our vehicles boosted properly at a decent amount of PSI and well maintained can run 13s no problem.
There was a story in the versus forum not too long ago about a kid & his father always talking trash cause the son had a turbo cavalier and the father had a corvette. Finally they ran one day and he beat his fathers Corvette. This is a vehicle that has a stock motor with a turbo kit installed...so imagine if he did do motor work and got proper traction for that power...
My point is the whole "there is no replacement for displacement" thing...doesn't mean too much now and days.

If you wanna be a stock gt im sure its totally possible but alot of mustang gt's that run people are not stock at all. most i ran(in my other car) usually had a k&n intake and full exhaust atleast. Im not a turbo expert but once you turbo your car it become pretty hight maitnance and it wont last you as long if its a daily driver. a guy from my work turobed and intercooled a civic hatchback (installed by a shop) and it lasted im about 10k miles before it went to shat. i dunno how long our cars last though.

^his civic must have been a piece of crap, had high miles to begin with or he didn't know what he was doing if he only got 10k out of it.
