First off, I would like to introduce myself....I'm Jimmy from Toronto. I like to drive the Cavalier as a winter car. There's not many places that it can't get in the snow! This is my 2nd one now, the other being a '89 base model. This one, a '95 Z24 (2.3l), I bought as a second vehicle to use all year round. I brought it in for emissions test today (with a tank of supreme gas) and here are the results:
ASM2525 Test
HC ppm: Limit 64 Reading 67 *FAIL*
CO%: Limit .035 Reading .047 *FAIL*
NOppm: Limit 485 Reading 981 *FAIL*
CURB IDLE Test
HC ppm: Limit 200 Reading 32
CO%: Limit 1.00 Reading 0.18
NOppm: Limit N/A Reading N/A
I usually put Methyl Hydrate in when I go for these tests, but I didn't think I had to this time. The car has 250,000 Km on it.
What do you guys think? Maybe a bad converter/vacuum lines/O2 sensor???

what does methyl hydrate do?
Next time take it with regular gas, and I am voting for a
bad cat. One year I almost failed the emission test. Got a new high flow cat with the cat-back system and two years later I passed with flying colors.

Yea methyl hydrate I used to use that in my 81 Camaro with duals exhaust no cats, I always passed the emissions tests, I used to use 87 chevron gas with 2 gallons of methyl hydrate, It burns really clean emissions. Well Jimmy Wicks, My guess would be youre cat as well,
If the cat is really old I would replace it.Second when u do that u need to defenitely replace ur O2 sensor and change ur oil and filter. The high emissions build up stay in the oil and DO affect the hc in ur cat and a emissions test.I would do plugs as well, but that's just me.Get a new cat,new oil change, plugs, 02 sensor and it should pass like its brand new.OK
curb idle is ok change your oil and air filter. the methyl hydrate can skew the machine (in both directions) use a regular fuel (octane = resistance to burn) and may be completing
ignition in the catilytic. dont replace the cat. and forget the O2 sensor in that car if its not throwing codes its ok. there is a dual o2 in that car one pre and one post catalytic and they reference one another.
best of luck hopefully the gov will phase that headache out,
It took 3 times, but finally it passed:
1: The initial test with nothing done, just supreme gas
2: Replaced palatum plugs, all vacuum lines, O2 sensor, air filter, oil and filter, "guaranteed to Pass" fuel system cleaner and 87 ESSO gas
3: Tank full of Sunoco 94 and 2 litres of Methyl Hydrate

is the car modded at all....cat bad, anyhting done that would make it fail emissions? if so then you have to reason to complain
Too bad it failed....
I am some glad here in Nova Scotia we don't have to do an emission test, just a yearly inspection test. I guess that's the down fall of living in a "big city".

No, no mods, and I would imagine that the cat is bad. And I'm not complaining, just posting for the rest what I found that worked to pass emissions. Hopefully this will help someone for troubleshooting!

While u do have two o2 sensors and they may not be throwing codes that does not mean a 10year cat would not in my opinion cause it to fail emissions.Good to see it passed but, regardless I still would replace that thing. That's just me.

This car only has 1 O2 sensor before the cat, and it's in the manifold. I checked, and then double checked....with no extra wires hanging around?

Okay being the emissions inspector I am I'll explain what's going on.
HC is Hydrocarbons. This means your burning too rich. Old plugs, bad air filter, Bad 02 Sensor.
CO% Carbon Monoxide- Incomplete burn Bad plugs, bad cat.
NO Nitrix Of Oxides. It is WAYYYY TOO Hot in trapped areas. Engine not cooling efficently.

I'm glad I live in an area that don't have emissions testing. I honestly don't think any of my cars would pass.
