Ok, my friend jost got a 2000 Toyota Celica, and he thinks its all sweet and all and he is always bragging how it goes 40 mph in first gear and 72 mph in second gear. So here is what I need to know, do I have to buy a whole new gearbox or something so I can have better speeds for each gear? Or is there a kit of some sort that I can buy? I am really tired of my car going 20 mph in first just before you redline it. And I am not going to let a 2000 Toyota Celica rice burner beat my 2005 Chevy Cavalier. Someone please help me out.
dude, if your gears were like that, you would be slower. Most car makers make thier second gear go to at least 60 mph purely to obtain a better 0-60 mph time, which usually makes the rpm's drop below the powerband on the 1st to 2nd gear shift.
I know on our ecotec's, 2nd dosen't go to 60 mph. I think it's way better gearing like that, b/c it seems more balaced.. My '93 Geo Prizm had a 2nd gear that went to 64 mph, but that 1.6 liter was slow as hell!
a higher top speed in a gear is not always a measure of quickness there's a lot more to it than that
i know exactly what you mean, but i am afraid that with his 160 hp and my stock amount of hp that he would beat me pretty badly. But I guess that if I have less hp that I should have some higher gear ratios to make up for the power. But how about this question, when I get some hp going in my Cavy, I know I am going to want some better gear ratios, i dont want a 200 hp Cavy that goes 20 mph tops in first gear. So what can i buy to change that, not that I will buy it now, but for the future.
I dont know of anything you could do to change your tranny gearing short of a tranny swap to a cobalt ss supercharged tranny
IF that is even possible............I bet you could get some custom gears made? maybe someone knows...
But it's not really necessary to change the gearing until you start getting to stupid power levels anyway.....
Oh and you should beat a Celica if it's a gt, those have 140 horsepower and 125 torque, the gt-s has 180 horse though and it's fast....they didn't make a 160 horse version.
Ok, I know he has a Celica Gt 2000. So my 2005 Chevy Cavy should beat him, thats good news. He has done something to his car that I havent though, he got a full exhaust system so he is getting a little more horses than a stock.
One more question, since he has about the same amount of horses, will he accelerate slower than me due to his gear ratios and being able to go 40 mph in first gear? If he will accelerate slower, should I have enough time be able to shift to second and still be ahead of him?
Dude trust me.. unless your driving sucks you can beat him. That means you accelerate quicker btw.
And I really dont see why you are worried about how fast it goes in first. Every car is different. Heck the del sol i had would do about 70 in 2nd gear but it was still slow.
