just curious to why they are called J-body's...

also, where did the the name Z24 come from? i used to think it was just because it's 2.4L, but then i realized that the older Z24's output a different displacement...

j-body is the chassis plaform...for instance n-body is grand ams and x-body is a chevy nova
z24 is just the upgrade options...on camaros the upgraded v8 is a z28....its just the options that come with it

its a J-body due to it being made on a "J" Platform... It is the family of cars made with the same chassis and mostly the same engine and drivetrain. Its just the way GM can group the cars made about the same. Such as Y-body ( Corvette ) or F-body ( Camaro/Firebird) and J-Body ( Cavalier/Sunfire).

Also, The Z24 is the code that GM uses for the package.. such as the Camaros Z28, Silverado Z71, Berretta Z26 and so on. Its just the trim level basically. I thought the same thing until I thought about it and was like wait a min. a Camaro Z28 doesnt have the 2.8.. lol, but I could see how you would think that.

Correct me if im wrong, I just thought I am at least on the right track with this.

This was taken from the FAQ:

Quote:

What is a J-Body?

A "J-Body" or "J-car" is any of General Motors J-platform vehicles. These include the Chevrolet Cavalier, Pontiac Sunfire, Sunbird and J2000, Oldsmobile Firenza, Buick SkyHawk and Cadillac Cimarron. All of these vehicles, while appearing distinctly different from each other, share a common frame and body layout.

If you look at the fourth digit of the vehicle identification number (VIN) of any J-Body, you will find the letter "J" (surprise, surprise!).

GM uses a different letter to designate each platform it builds vehicles on, for example:

F: Camaro, Firebird.
N: Grand Am, Malibu, Alero
W: Grand Prix, Impala
Y: Corvette

Contrary to seemingly popular belief in some tuner circles that the J stands for "Junk", according to GM it is merely the platform designation - it doesn't actually stand for anything.

I thought it was
z - the 'upgrade' symbol
2 - 2-door
4 - 4-cylindar

It would work for most

z28 - 2door v8
z24 - 2door i4
z26 - 2door v6
z71 - 7door 1cylindar............okay, maybe not.

-The 4-door Z24 in two-thousand

and probably some others.

It's the Regular Production Option, RPO, code from the manufacturer. It's always a 3 character code. The first character is the group, i.e. 1is Preferred Equipment Groups, L is engines, F is suspensions, and Z is miscellaneous option packages. Everything on the vehicle has an RPO code it tells the assembly line what is going on a certain car.

Some well known RPOs are:
RPO LLY: Duramax Diesel engine to be mated to Allison 1000 transmission
RPO LB7: Duramax Diesel engine to be mated to 6-speed manual transmission
RPO LD9: 2.4L Twin Cam 4-cylinder
RPO L61: 2.2L Ecotec engine
RPO LT1: 2nd Generation SBC found in Camaros and C4 Corvettes
RPO LT4: 2nd Generation SBC found in C4 Corvette Grand Sport
RPO LS1: 3rd Generation SBC found in Camaros, C5 Corvettes, and GTOs
RPO LS6: 3rd Generation SBC found in C5 Z06 Corvette, and Catera CTS-V
RPO LS2: 4th Generation SBC found in C6 Corvette, GTO, and SSR
RPO LS7: 4th Generation SBC found in C6 Z06 Corvette
RPO FE0: J-Body Suspension package
RPO FE1: J-Body Suspension package
RPO F51: Corvette Competition suspension package
RPO WS6: Upgraded Firebird Performance package
RPO Z06: Upgraded Corvette Performance package
RPO Z24: Upgraded Cavalier Performance package
RPO Z71: Silverado, Canyon, Colorado, Tahoe, and Suburban Off-Road Package
RPO Z26: Upgraded Beretta Performance package
RPO Z28: Upgraded Camaro Performance package
RPO Z34: Upgraded Monte Carlo Performance package
RPO ZR2: S-10, Sonoma, Blazer Off-Road Package
RPO 1SA: Preferred Equipment Group for LS trim trucks
RPO 1SB: Upgraded Preferred Equipment Group for LS trim trucks

I don't know every RPO, or what every group is nor do I claim to, but I can tell you when something is an RPO and when it isn't.

In the case of the Z06, Z28, Z71, ZR2, Z24, Z34, and Z26 GM decided to market the RPO as the trim level as well, which is why most people don't know what they really stand for, and the other RPOs, except for certain engines aren't marketed so most people don't even know they exist.

Know what car was crazy, the Lumina Z34 like, the 92, 93 and 94 style, My pop had one of those things you cannot kill them, they were real boaty and had that straight dash with the wood grain. Man I wish we still had that son of a b*tch.
