how hard is it from 1-10 10 being the hardest is to install and have running like it came with the engine in a 1998 cavalier?
I believe most engine swaps are generally the same. It's going to be easier if you have experience or know exactly what your doing. It will be harder if your just guessing what to do. I myself have never installed a motor myself but this is just common knowledge I'm saying.

The actual engine swap should fairly stright forward BUT the wireing and engine controls are gonna be a different story.
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
so if i get the engine all the wireing and cpu and tranny i could possably do the 5-speed swap. my uncle dose engine work and can do it.
Your gonna have so much fun with the wiring.

The 2.4 ECO just came out like 2 weeks ago so they might be kinda pricey for a while.
But if you meant swaping a 2200 with a 2.4 then if should only be a matter of hunting thru junkyards to find a doner car. Wireing will still be fun tho.
good luck

There are some problems with trying to do that. 1st, you have to actually find a donor Cobalt SS that has the motor which is going to be HARD since it just came out within this month.
2nd, that motor has VVT which is controlled electronically so there is no telling that the Cobalts PCM will work with our cars sensors etc.
All and all...it's not going to be easy and it's going to be ALOT of risk into trying this because you won't even know if it will work properly.
For the amount of money your spending to get the motor and swap it into your car, you can build your 2.2 OHV and boost it to more than 170 HP crank. Yes VVT would be nice but unless your actually buying an Cobalt SS or have alot of money...it's not worth it.

Hrothgar wrote:okay, so what if i went with the 2.2 ecotec....
and if i just went with the 2.4 how much do you think it'd be to get someone to wire it up right?
Most places charge the same amount of money to do a motor swap unless you have hookups. I've seen prices of $1000-1200 estimated.
But yes, swapping a 2.4 or ECO in would be easier and more affordable than trying to get a 2.4 VVT ECO motor.

holy @!#$
1000-1200??
wow i was figuring in the 400-500 area just to have it wired up.
so which engine would you suggest? my 2.2 got beat tonight by my friends 2.4 twin cam...and i'm just tired of beating civics all the time.

lol

It really all depends on where you go. The shop by me, if they have to take the motor out...it's an immediate $1000. So for a whole swap your talking about that much but if they are just wiring it up, it might be cheaper...you never know though cause wiring is the hard part.
The only motor I would suggest swapping is an ECOTEC but you have to think, is it worth spending ATLEAST $2000 to gain 30 HP? That money could go torwards a turbo kit and you can boost for more power than that.

Hrothgar wrote:yea i guess your right.....
my engine is getting old though and has 115K miles on it, so you think i should still get a turbo hooked up to it?
Damn...that sounds like some mileage right there. It's generally not good to boost a high mileaged non-boosted motor.
I don't know what to say cause it depends how much money your really willing to invest....

i'm gonna git me wonna dem der electronical supermachargers w00t!1!
I hope thats a joke, cause they dont work, and a good Turbo setup will cost you just as much, if not more then swapping the engine.

Best suggestion is to save up and when the time is right and you make a decision, you'll be prepared for it.

if i were you, id swap in n Ecotec. you can find one with less mileso n it than you would a 2.4

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
Hrothgar wrote:so if i bought the engine, what else would i have to buy to get the car running
You need a donor car pretty much cause you need EVERYTHING out of it. You need the Engine, Transmission (your tranny won't fit on an ECOTEC), Wiring, Ignition system, Fuel rail, Fuel lines, mounts and any other part that you see in that car that you might think you need.
It's alot of work, alot of money and alot of time to do.

if it a pre 2000 then you'll need the BCM and the internal wiring too, thats why its a good idea to get a donor car. I have a list of almost everything you would need email me and I'll send it to you.
