Did I do that?
Tuesday, June 28, 2005 6:23 PM
hey there... i put a pioneer cd deck, amp, and subs in my car a couple weeks ago and starting last thursday i noticed my car started acting up (shutting off as i was driving down the road, having to turn it over about a dozen times before it would start). i was wondering if maybe the two are connected, because i had my dash all to pieces putting the sound system in, including around the steering column. When i took it to a licensed mechanic he had me buy a 90$ (CDN) ignition switch and charged me for 60$ labour... should this be a warning for anyone to watch out for this switch or was it a fluke that only happened to me? haha

A little more detail on the ignition recall:

Recall Date: MAR 06, 2002

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH

Potential Units Affected: 1589948

Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES. IF THE ENGINE FAILS TO START AND THE DRIVER HOLDS THE KEY IN THE "START" POSITION FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD, HIGH CURRENT FLOWS THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH, AND SOMETIMES PRODUCES ENOUGH HEAT TO MELT INTERNAL SWITCH PARTS.

Consequence: IF THE SWITCH IS DAMAGED, A FIRE COULD OCCUR IN THE STEERING COLUMN, EVEN WITH THE ENGINE OFF AND THE KEY REMOVED.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A RELAY KIT IN THESE VEHICLES TO PREVENT HIGH CURRENT FROM FLOWING THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 27, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, PONTIAC AT 1-800-762-2737, BUICK AT 1-800-521-7300, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-6537.

Notes: GENERAL MOTORS CORP., 02008

Also, check if your alternator can keep up with the new stereo system. Cavs are kind of known for failing alternators.

yeah i heard that also... so im wondering if any of these solutions people have been telling me would work:

-install a capacitor
-buy a deep cycle battery
-install a second battery
-buy a heavier alternator
-use a smaller amp (lol)

I don't think a second battery is necessary and worth the headache. Installing a capacitor (that the farad and wattage matches correctly to) should help alot.

I called general motors today and they told me that only 337025 units shipped to Canada were affected by the recall, and after giving them my vin# they told me my car wasnt affected. Still I wonder what caused my ignition switch to burn out, but I'll not concern myself unless it happens again. Thanks for the tips people.
