Trans fluid and filter. stipid question
Monday, June 27, 2005 12:12 PM
just wondering, how often should trans fluid and filter be changed. got my car at 67775, and it was certified, but have no idea if either of these were changed, also, another dumb question. does the oil filter get changed everytime the oil is changed. thanks

That isn't in the owners manual.

you sure? i think it mentions it where it tells you that theres no trans dipstick. but its been awhile since i even looked at the manual, what a good read that was! but in
case i'm wrong the trans is sealed the only way to service it is to take it to the dealer.
how many miles are on your car? and are you only doing this for preventive maint. or is something wrong cause according to my service manager that thing should never have to be serviced. i know what your thinkin but he claims they never need to be done.

I changed the fluid and gasket on my 4t40e at 50,000 miles. I think that is when the manual recommends doing it. It was kind of a pain in the butt and made a huge mess.

the older cavs have a fill yube on them dont they redgoat? i think g.m. did away with
the dipstick and fill tube on like 00 or 01. i agree thou it is kind of stupid to make it so you can do it.

I looked all though my manual and didn't see anything. there is no dipstick of course but i can see where you add trans fluid. my car has 70300 miles on it. didn't know if it's ever been changed. would like to get the filter and fluid changed but dealer wants like $170 for. I think that's outrageous.

If your drive you car hard, live in a hot climate or alot of city traffic doing it yearly is a good idea. No more then 30K intervals though, but if everything is normal, you can get away with 50K. Whatever you do, donot get a full trans flush done above 70-80K, can cause serious problems inside the trans. Luckily most places will not do a flush on higher mileage cars, too much of a liability for them I would think.
