Loose shifter - Hard to shift

I'm sorry if this question has been asked before but here it goes.....

I have a 95' Z22 5 Speed, there is a lot of play in my shifter, while in gear I can move the shifter about 2 inches in any direction. It is becoming hard to shift, and the shifter seems to be catching on something. I don't think there is a problem with the tranny.

What can I do to fix this problem and smooth out my shifting?

Check the bushing in the shifter they may be worn . You may be able to replace them or just buy another shifter from the salvage yard . The hard shifting could be the shifter needing some grease to lube everything up .

If the bushing and everthing check out OK check and see if the cables are OK on the tranny side . They could wear out on either end or become loose .

1st off, there is no such thing as a Z22. What you have is a 95 Cavalier 5-speed.

As for the problem.. as MrG. said. But I figured I'd throw in that now might be a good time to pick up a B&M shifter since you'll likely have the assembly apart anyway. Once you pop the console out, you should be able to see exactly where there is too much play, whether it be the cables or the shifter itself.

By that logic, there are also Type-R Cavaliers and Sunfire GTO's out there as well. If it has a badge on it, it must be real!

I wasn't starting a discussion on the topic. I was stating a fact. Anyone with differing opinions is wrong.

there is no such thing as a Z22... dealers put those badges on to sell the car... its called Dealer Rice. my freind put a mercedes emblem on his izuzu trooper..does that make it a mercedes?

and dont say..."well the dealer put it on so its obviously real"

the dealer will do anything they can to sell the car even if they have to tell you its a Modena Spydar Cavalier
