What's the power steering pump bolted to? This is centrifugal right? The blower is spun off the cam?

Yeah a RSM kit.

I never liked the idea of it spinning off the cam.

The cars that had them never seemed to preform that good either.

That IS a RSM setup, and the worst part about them was the "non" tune that you got with the setup. They were pretty good for lower boost levels.

Yes, it was powered by the intake cam.

Regardless, it sounds pretty sick. A guy posted his setup on here last year or the year before with vids and sounded sweet, contant whine.

Great idea theoretically... didnt they leak oil like a siv?

It is the RSM/Z-Spec Vortech Supercharger kit. I had that kit for years. With tuning it does make power, but there was always problems. Most were nuisance problems. If you ever have the opportunity to get this kit for cheap, don't. Though I will say RSM/Z-Spec did provide great customer service (at least to me).

Once all the little BS issues were taken care of, belt slippage, correct oil seals, and a proper tune with supporting mods was taken care of, it really was not that bad.

Does anyone have any dyno/track numbers with this kit?

At 5psi with a 12:1 FMU and No other fuel mods or tuning, I made about 190hp at the crank. I cant recall the torque numbers. I never got numbers with 6 psi and LSJ injectors but I'd imagine at least 200hp.

Dunno why people would wanna run these kits when an M62 can achieve better numbers for a lot less money.

M62 wasnt an option when I got this kit, but yes you are right there is no reason with the M62 available.

This kits was available for the LD9 for years before the eco or M62 were around and then they adapted the kit to the eco. I feel with the right combination of pullies and an intercooler as well as proper tuning this setup could keep up to an M62 at the same boost levels. This style supercharger is supposed to be more efficient than the roots style. Unfortionatly this kit fizzled out around the time HPtuners came out for our cars so none had really good tunes to go off of for HP numbers. Plus they leaked oil bad at the cam tower..

I mean, I think its cool and all. But I think they just didn't think it through to well.
They should have ran a shaft under the intake to the crank pulley instead of running it off the cam.

If I recall correct someone on here was making bracket to mount it down in replace of the a/c to run it off the crank

There were a lot more problems with the kit than people realize. It was not just an oil leak and poor tuning. More air and more fuel is more air and more fuel. Tune it right and you will make power regardless of where the air and fuel is coming from. Someone did try to mount the charger in a different location but it proved more difficult than they anticipated which is likely why RSM/Z-spec did not pursue that route. In theory this set up would have provided a viable alternative for boost, but in reality that was not the case. Some people experienced problems worse than others but the general consensus was that this kit generated headaches. The following went wrong with my kit:

The belt that came with the kit slipped and only generated 5 psi. I was able to fit a 1 inch smaller belt, but it was by no means any easy task.
Small oil leak from the drive housing. Replaced and upgraded the bearings and seals. Still leaked.
Small oil leak from the charger itself. Not RSM's fault, but you would expect better from Vortech. The cost to send it out to get fixed would be insane.
The metal of the pulley is stronger than that of the nut that drives the power steering pump. After 40k miles it wore it down to the point that it would no longer grip and I had to replace the PS pump.
If you owned a 2002 Cavalier, the lack of hood clearance meant you should expect rubbing and thus a cosmetic blemish.
Finally the oil sending unit T-fitting failed and oil came spewing out in great abundance as I tried to drive anywhere. For me that was the last straw.

I dismantled the kit and sold the Vortech components separately on eBay as the kit itself was worthless and I couldn't in good conscious sell it to anyone on here.

Bottom line is that kit was a novelty of an earlier J-body era but was/is fatally flawed and obsolete. As I've said above, if you have the opportunity to get your hands on this kit, just shy away.

Yep, and I designed a pulley for him. It was a silver sunfire. I guess he had no idea what costs are on one off parts. "I think he got in over his head with the build."

Aw interesting, I know he either sold his or I'm pretty sure he duplicated his for Wayders. I think wayde still has it with the idea of running it one day

huh, wouldnt having it run off the cam put alot of stress on the cam? like the tower/bearing on that side? did anyone succesfully put down a decent amount of power with one of these? did anyone ever intercool one? seems like an ugly setup for plumbing in an intercooler as far as pipe routing lol

sorry for double posting but i was just looking at the picture of the red one and it looks like the air filter is right above the hole where the intake bong comes in on stock cars, why didnt anyone ever route the intake down into the fender like a cai? wouldnt that air be cooler? cause it looks like the filter is right behind the rad in that pic.
